Thanks Dandelion. Until we can somehow force health care to not be another commodity in the US, nothing will change. Obama, though not as offensive as Lord Romney, represents throwing a bone to the masses and nothing more.

obamacare was never intended to stop people from going broke. it was a give away to the insurance companies for their support of obama. the insurance companies got a great big cash cow from obama and the people got screwed. they have to buy garbage plans with high dollar premiums and they get a few free tests in return. if they ever get really sick they are screwed and will go broke even faster than if they had no insurance. at least when they had no insurance they could save a few bucks for a rainy day but now that money goes to the insurance companies or the irs take your pick.

This total intrusion is NOT even JUST about their cash cow and money income from it. For those who don't believe me,you'd better WAKE UP, NOW !! Get a FULL copy of it and make sure you DO NOT MISS the part about MEDI CHIPS!! Built INTO "their plan" is a mandate to put a "so called" medi-chip into EVERYONE!
Well,if this is not the LAST thing the public SHOULD need to call ENOUGH and impeach the dictator Obama AND trash, shred, flush, repeal, abolish and otherwise COMPLETELY get RID of Obamacare, and start taking our country and lives back, getting rid of IT and all of IT''s kind, then enjoy your TOTAL control!
I am not usually THIS blunt on the care2 forum and site but this is one issue where dictator O, his "plan" and ALL of his cronies, can ALL go F*** themselves! I will NEVER succumb to THAT! The public, in mass (that means EVERYBODY or at least the majority) needs to REFUSE to buy or PAY for it,AND as for the IRS fining you,DO NOT pay them EITHER! Stop being "scared" by a PRIVATE and technically ILLEGAL corporation (the IRS)!
The IRS IS actually a private entity, but MOST people DO NOT know and understand that,AND technically, constitutionally, you DO NOT have to pay or BOW DOWN to them,or their SCARE tactics! Ever wonder why,or how it could be possible that they will "cut a deal" for WAY less than what they initially "claim" someone "owes" when they decide to harass them, when that someone tells them F*** you,and DOES NOT just bow down to and pay them,no questions asked?! THINK ABOUT IT! You have 2 choices. Either bow down,be the "perfect sheep" PAY them to be TOTALLY controlled and FEAR them always, OR you can ABSOLUTELY REFUSE to submit to their intrusions, scare tactics,LIES and all the rest of THEIR self serving BS!

Brilliant video. I nominate Dr. Flowers for Surgeon General. Or maybe President in 2016. The sad thing is that there was no new information there. We know this, we've known it all along and we have, as a Congress and Executive branch, allowed Health Insurance companies to dictate health care policy because the profits are huge and they contribute a lot to campaigns of those who shill for them, like the republican party. I've posted before data on this, something Dr. Flowers mentioned, we already HAVE the resources to go to a single payer system, one that would be of actual benefit to all of us. I think it more likely, in the short run, that what Congress might do, but hopefully the president would veto and would never get through the Senate, is place medical expense among the things that may now be discharged in bankruptcy along with those items already exempted. Far fetched? Not to me, this is how for profit people think. What good is running up a massive bill only to lose it to bankruptcy? No, the insurance companies want that money even if it means, literally, hounding an obligor until death and beyond if there is any estate at all. They already do this in many governmental policies including for instance the case of those who die intestate and are buried by the state or local county - they literally go through that person's house looking for assets to sell to reclaim their costs. That is one direction we could go. I don't think we will, but single payer is not coming without a protracted fight because there are literally billions of dollars of 1%er profits at stake. This link leads to an excellent PBS article, complete with graphics, showing how the US ranks in health spending in 2012, written up last October, take a look, please, it literally screams for single payer. Health Care Costs by Country This is not an issue that will go away, nor should it, the only answer is single payer and it is just a crying shame it is taking us so long to get to where we must and will, eventually. The more this information is disseminated, the better the public understanding and the stronger the pressure the public will put on elected officials to finally do the right thing and cover everyone, all the time, for a fraction of the cost.

A few years ago there was this anger about the insurance industries raising premiums and raising premiums and getting away with it.
there was an outcry. Now they are at it still. But, where is the outrage that they got away with it then and are still at it?

I just got my eyes rechecked and got new glasses. I have vision coverage. I got $150 off my prescription. The glasses only cost me $300. I bet I can send my prescription to an online vision store and get these same glasses for about $100. My insurance costs $400 a month. WHAT a rip off.

Thanks so much for posting this excellent video, Dandelion!
Although we were glad our young adult kids got an "extension" of healthcare coverage, we noticed the employee portion of our premiums skyrocket. This is absolutely disgusting. My son, who "ages out" in a couple weeks, can't afford to pay for health insurance premiums since he lost his job a few months ago and lives with us.
I saw the writing on the wall when those who were going to speak for "single payer-public option" were arrested outside the doors of the initial meeting on the subject. Then Congress took over and called it "health insurance reform." This wasn't "health CARE reform." Yeah, they reformed it so the insurance companies made even MORE money off people's illness.
The main point I took from this video is "health care is a human right---NOT a commodity." For-profit healthcare is wrong and increasing our national debt, since it's 18% of the GDP.

Tom? "Well,if this is not the LAST thing the public SHOULD need to call ENOUGH and impeach the dictator Obama AND trash, shred, flush, repeal, abolish and otherwise COMPLETELY get RID of Obamacare, and start taking our country and lives back, getting rid of IT and all of IT''s kind, then enjoy your TOTAL control! "

That is just a bit vitriolic, don't you think? We elect presidents. This country has never had, and does not now, have a dictator leading us. Is Obamacare perfect, well, no far from it. But I don't think hate speech is going to change things. THIS, is what he could get past a republican congress. Is this what he would have proposed had he majorities in both Houses? No. I think we'd be on our way to single payer coverage, see link in my previous comment. I'm not sure where your anger comes from but I am sure it is keeping from seeing things in a more realistic frame.

Amusingly, I am reading at present Flash and Bones, by Kathy Reich, who is the person who inspired the tv series, Bones. This story, which I am only half way through, has at its core, people who sound a lot like you. Conspiracy theorists, homegrown militia's who believe their way the only way and are willing to do whatever it takes to replace our government WITH a dictatorship. I'm not sure why you don't see how fortunate you are to have been born into a country that allows you the freedom to express the opinions you do without consequence. That really is irony defined. No one is going to implant any "chips" in you without your consent, nor likely with it, as we don't really do that here. You can argue about the IRS but the ability to tax to fund our government is right there in the constitution. I'd suggest you just relax, no one is coming for you. I'd suggest you take a chill pill but given your feelings about medicine, that probably wouldn't be a good idea, you'd think there was a "medi-chip" in it. So, tell me true, have you seen Sicko? Are you aware of how much more than other developed nations we spend on health care, with poorer results, and are you really okay with 50 million of us having no health care at all? I'd explain about how using the ER as your primary care and not being able to pay that harms us all, but I have a feeling you'd dismiss that too, even though it has nothing at all to do with dictatorships.

Obama-care is nothing more than a gift to the insurance industry!

Gene J (290)
Friday May 10, 2013, 4:21 pm
Robert, that is both right and wrong. It will get insurance to people who have none, but as the video makes clear, it is better than nothing. Which is what was and THAT was the greatest gift of all to eh Insurance industry, is it surprising they fought even this tidbit, tooth and nail? We have a very long way to go, this is but single step on a very long journey. It needn't be that way and it wouldn't were not the republican party so committed to maintaining their benefactors, the insurance industry's 1%'s income as it has been. Once they are gone, or the people realize that the only thing standing between them and outstanding health care IS the republican party and the 1%, things will change and we will join the rest of the developed world in having a single payer system at a fraction of the cost we pay now.

Noted and shared on Facebook, Sheryl. Thanks for this post. Gene Jacobson has the most clearly stated comments about our health care that I have read in a long time. My sister pays over $800 per month for her health insurance to cover her disabled husband and 19 year old son, and is still racked by bills every month. Her son also has Chron's disease. Until we get single payer insurance, most of us will be out of luck. I am not happy with our health care reform, either, but it is a step in the right direction and if we could get our congress, who receive huge donations from the insurance companies to work for us instead of their corporate sponsors, we would have it.

!62% of personal bankruptcies were due to medical costs and illness - almost 80% of those had medical health insurance!" It horrifies me that the good people I know in America are subjected to this ghastly system - I know of two amazingly good and wonderful people on Care2 (and I bet there are many more) who have had to sell their homes to try and save their beloved spouses - and they had some of the best health insurance around! That is so utterly and completely WRONG!!!!

Very good video - America spends 2.5 the times the average OECD nation does on healthcare - and we know where it is going - PROFITS for the greedy and uncaring! I remember in another article that America is something like 17th in the quality of care it gets for its money - again it is going to profits for the greedy. Thanks so much for this Dandelion - you deserve another star! (Stars to Edith and Gene and others - if the computer will let me!)

Noted. Looks like I disagree with many commenters. However. I don't believe that the Affordable Care Act is the enemy. It basically makes it so that uninsured folks who need medical care can get it. Whether others with insurance go beyond their finances is not the business of the ACA. It is sad, indeed, and that is the fault of the medical community including pharmaceutical companies charging to the max. It has nothing, however, to do with "Obamacare". Saying that the plan should include 80/20 or 90/10 is not applicable either. What it is doing is providing medical care to people that have none, can afford none. Folks with preexisting conditions and serious illnesses are covered. Sorry if those with insurance have companies that won't offer better. That is not the fault of the ACA. I like that folks who cannot afford insurance, who are sick, can get medical care. We cannot blame the greed of pharmaceutical companies and health care providers on the ACA.

I think what most feel on here is that ACA doesn't go far enough, they'd rather see the Universal Health Care and not feed into the Greed on the Private Health Care For Profit Insurance anymore. This might have helped a few get insurance but for others it has placed their insurance into an unaffordable place. I don't think when it is covering some on one side then uncovering others is a fair trade off. Until all are covered and we have as other humane Countries do, a card given at birth to use and a tax paid at each purchase to pay for the health coverage, we are just shifting the deck chairs around on the Titanic.

Have to say here what a relief it is should I accidentally spear my foot while digging with a pitchfork or suffer some life threatening accident...the ER is available to me and I never see any medical bill. I can go see a doctor or a specialist with no bill sent to me. I am always grateful for the fact that my country has a universal health care system where all citizens contribute to the health of others and we don't feel put upon or threatened by this fact. I can't even begin to imagine the stress, fear and even bankruptcies that result if a citizen cannot afford to pay for their medical care. That is beyond comprehensive.

Why the American people tolerate this system, why they are not out in droves, banging upon every one of the Elected Representatives Office doors is beyond me. I've been in this battle since back in the late seventies, it wasn't a good system then but it's even worse today.

Too many are still brainwashed that this is the best way to do things in this world. Too many buy into the For Profit Propaganda that has millions behind it to push out the ads that convince people not to change things. It is so sad, that the USA is stuck in this inhumane system to treat it's citizens, and the last one to get on board to do better by it's citizens. I'm not sure how many more people must needlessly die or loose all they own before they start to really get in some lasting uproar.

There used to be a thing called Anti Trust and monopoly laws. Obviously,NOW,just like SO many other things, these laws conveniently seem to ONLY apply to certain groups (like the common citizens) but NOT the entire country,ALL citizens AND the government too! If such is even remotely tolerable to the public, then the public needs to REALLY learn the definition of SPECIAL INTEREST "laws", because Omabacare, etc. IS one if there ever was!
Analogy> Let's say,I decided to start a company making T-shirts, but ONLY bright yellow with light green and purple stripes. (just what everyone want's huh?!) THEN, I get a "law" passed that says EVERYONE IS REQUIRED to buy MY T-shirts! Let's go one better, I get yet ANOTHER "law" passed that says,on Thursday's at 3:00pm, EVERYONE is REQUIRED to be wearing one and if they are NOT then they WILL BE FINED $3000 !!
Pretty damned insanely ludicrous huh??!!!
Yet,Obamacare and it's whole "structure" is no different! It is saying: YOU WILL buy and pay for it REGARDLESS of whether you want it OR NOT,or will EVER even use it,AND if you DO NOT just COMPLY and do so,then you WILL be FINED!
Must be nice to have a "business" that is GUARANTEED customers, and income, yet DOES NOT even have to guarantee what, IF ANY, products or services they will even provide in return!
One,has to wonder just how many more intrusions, oppression and destruction of rights, income, privacy, home, family, and the last of everything the public will keep putting up with. NOTHING gets more personal than your own body and health. So there should be NO question whatsoever that ANY attempt by ANYONE to FORCE things upon someones body and health IS %100 UNACCEPTABLE !

Gina Caracci (219)

Obamacare was passed when they didnt even know what they were passing because they DONT CARE. They are set for LIFE. Insurance shouldnt be for profit in the hell do you expect people to get real care when the bottom line is profit?
I see where Tom and Gene are coming from, but soon we will NOT be able to express our opinions on line anyhow or protect ourselves. Did you hear what Obamas homeland security has been up to? Buying up ammo likes its going out of style and retrofitted almost 3000 tanks to fit our streets. They are firing those who wont fire at American citizens. They have over 1 BILLION rounds. WHAT are they planning exactly? Things are going down hill FAST unless we stand up NOW.

Like Dandelion said WHERES THE OUTRAGE???

Other countries that do it far better than the U.S. with better life expectancies can show us how it's done. We have to get off our high horse and realize we are no longer the best country on earth...not on healthcare, not on infrastructure, not on technology and other advances. How can we be when they keep cutting funding for education at every level while smart countries are investing in their children and their future? Read about the fall on Rome. Ignore history and we're doomed to repeat it.

Exploiting ill health as a commodity on Wall Street FOR PROFIT, is a SICK system.

Sheryl G (360)
Tuesday May 14, 2013, 10:59 am
Well said Roseann.

You bring up some good points Gina on the health care, with NDAA anything is now possible, and Roseann on the educational point.

For example Philadelphia high school students are protesting at the cityís board of ed because this fifth largest school district in the nation is technically bankrupt. Short some $160 million for next yearís school budget, the district is closing nearly 40 schools, canceling school plays, laying off teachers, eliminating after school programs, and cutting lunch programs.

Basically the kids will be essentially prisoners in institutions that donít offer anything but regimented test preparation. We don't want them to be creative thinkers, that might cause them to rebell against a society that only requires them to be a clog in the system. Just smart enough to follow some instructions but not too smart as to question things.

This article is a good read on the education and what the farce of the Charter Schools are doing to education.

It's refreshing to even hear anyone talking about Single Payer, which is the only way to go that makes any sense. Now is the time to talk about it even more. The insurance companies are WORTHLESS PARASITES! They are a symptomatic of how rigged our system really is. Thanks Dandelion.

You pay for high cost of medical insurance, then you pay for high cost of hospitals, and you see people walk in to get DRUGS FREE and help and not pay or some of them here in San Diego are illegal...Then you have hard times and they put you in collection...Makes a ton of Nonsense!
