Religion Is Not An Excuse - Petition

Love has won and marriage equality is now legal in all US states. But one Ohio judge refuses to marry gay and lesbian couples: he has asked for permission to use religion as an excuse for discrimination.

I thought we made a distinction between religion and state. Does this judge not have religious freedom? He have no church to go to? Cannot choose freely to participate in one of the myriad choices?

Or is it that he does not understand the distinction between church and state? Perhaps he is not aware that he is not employed by a church? Surely we can help him with that.

He should be released from his position and allowed to seek employment in the church of his choice to pursue his religious values within the scope of the church. Puff, no more conflict and he lives happily ever after, without conflict in the confines of the church of his choice. Isn't America great?

M. B., thank you for the link to the article about the attack by an off-duty police officer on 2 black women because he believed they were gay.

We need better police training and assessment; if they can't toe the line, through them off the force.

I did not sign this petition, as I don't believe that it is at all discriminatory, to choose to live your life according to your own personal conscience, and to do what you feel is right for you in any circumstances. I believe that every person is entitled to freedom of choice, without condemnation. Thankfully, we are not obliged to follow the crowd, but to choose freely and to think for ourselves. Showing willingness to respect each others choices, when we may not necessarily agree with them, is the key to a happy and peaceful existence. Therefore, I believe that the Judge, like all of us, has every right to exercise his freedom of choice in accordance with his own personal conscience. Thank you, Dandelion.

Sorry I did not sign as I feel the Judge should have freedom of choice for whatever reason
If it is against his beliefs who are we to make him
Doctors are not forced to carry out abortions if it is against there belief I agree with that also

Is this judge any different to the court clerk who refused to issue a licence? No, they are both required to do their job within the law.

marie, you can't compare this to a doctor refusing an abortion, as there is no law (that I'm aware of) that says says abortion is now legal throughout the US.

@ Irene M., you're an idiot, the man is in a civil position that requires him to follow the law, that he won't isn't a personal choice it's illegal. He has one choice, quite his job and do something else. If he was slinging burgers in a burger joint and refused to serve a gay couple he'd likely be fired as he should here if not charged. If you read the link it starts with "A low level Judge in Ohio", they could have stopped there as the guy is certainly "low level" and he's no longer qualified to be a Judge if he won't follow the law.

I agree, the Judge is asked to perform his duties, he doesn't have to agree with it, he just is being asked to do his job. If he believes that strongly then he needs to step down and do something else. It is the law, and as a Judge it is the law he is involved with, he of all people need to follow the laws.

So signed! Freedom of religion does NOT mean freedom to impose your religion on another. The Republicanus/Teabaggerum and their rabid base especially need to learn this.

@ Irene M and Marie C --- The judge does have freedom of religion for himself so he can attend the church of his choice and believe as he wishes. What he does not have is the freedom to impose his religion on anyone else. As a public official, he is obliged to uphold the law and to see to its equal application to all citizens. That's his job! If he cannot carry out the duties of his job, then he needs to find another where he doesn't feel compromised.

@ Ken O. Firstly, your insulting and abusive remark about me is totally uncalled for, and unacceptable. Bullying is a nasty trait, and is unacceptable to me, care 2, or anywhere else for that matter. As you are so clued up on the law you will be aware that many U.S. States have laws against bullying. Furthermore, may I remind you that I am free to post an opinion on care 2, without ridicule for daring to have an opinion that differs from yours. However, I choose to do so with decorum, and without insulting anyone in the process, likewise, in return I expect the same consideration. You may address the women in your life in such a manner, and that is your prerogative, but when you address me, you will do so respectfully, or not at all. Anyhow, it could be a lot worse......I could be like you!

The combination of Marco C.'s and Lynn Squance's comments says very well what I wanted to say. Thank you for your humor and eloquence. I have green stars to you. I also gave a green star to Irene for her response to Ken. I was will her all the way up until her last sentence, but I was pleased that she stood up for respectful communications between us supposedly intelligent human beings. Ken did not need to be so rude. I signed this petition because I believe this law should be enforced by those who are employed as agents of the government, whether Town Clerk or Judge at any level.

I also have sympathy for Irene's view. I have made decisions about jobs according to my conscience, but most of the time that meant I had to leave the job, not change the job to suit my personal views. It's a hard decision sometimes, but understanding the true separation of church and state means what Lynn S. explained so cogently in her statement above. Thanks, y'all and especially Dandelion.

Noted and signed ~ once again it comes down to the separation of church and state. And frankly, there has been a lot of talk of Christians being persecuted and yet time after time I see anyone who is not a Christian being discriminated against. The law should be followed no matter what religion you follow, even if you don't agree with it.

I see no reason for religion to be aloud to be used as an excuse to not do your job at any time. that's why I think it should be allowed only in your own home not on public display . and I'm sure he was aware that some of his cases might not be to his liking but using religion as an excuse not to do his job is no reasonable excuse at all .do your job or find another . Thank You Dandelion . oh and by the was Ken o just because you disagree with someone , it's not an excuse to prove to the majority of us your a jerk .

people have the right to their own religious and other opinions...BUT they do not have the right to stop someone else from doing what they want in their personal lives, ESP if no one is being your opinion if need be but leave it at that...funny how the right cries how our rights are being taken from us...well whos doing it?
this judge has a job to do...if he doesnt like it..quit...

religious opinions DO NOT TRUMP someone elses rights...that is how things are going now thoughwhich means we are screwed if a rightie wins 2016

have seen this alot since the ruling...lawsuits, etc...get over it people
