Criminalizing Mental Health - Petition

Society & Culture  (tags: mental illness, petition, illness not crime, incarceration, America, police training, death of disabled, death of mentally ill, mentally ill shot )

America is treating mental illness through incarceration and the price we are paying both in dollars and human capital is enormous. It is time to take action and start treating mental illness as a health issue, not a crime.

If they keep treating mental illness as a crime there will be few people walking free. But then, the US already has the world's largest prison population and that is not on a per capita basis, just raw numbers.

Cops are not trained and neither are nurses in regular emergent care. It,s easier to shoot to kill than get a trained staff member get the victim help. Ronald Reagn started this mess. When will we fix this mess people ? Wake up and start the dang revolution

This certainly seems like a backwards step for society. They used to do this over a hundred years ago, in Victorian times in Britain. Anyone who had any mental health issues, institutionalized, incarcerated. . . and from this a LOT of verbal, physical, psychological and sexual abuse originated.

I know that the military is using “Mind Control” on people. Supposedly this is how the German air plane was drowned as they mind controlled the pilot. Pharmaceutical companies have also developed implants which we are innocently taking with our normal medicine as it is hidden in our pills.
There is so much going on and people have no idea what is happening to them.
I only can say “God help us.”

Birgit, I believe you have been watching too many science fiction movies!
Petition signed, but it ought to have been titled "Mental ILLNESS needs to be treated, not criminalized!"
Once again, the guardian saint of the GOP, St. Reagan, can be implicated in a horrid situation, as, when he was governor of Ca., he destroyed what was then the best MH treating system in the country!
It would appear to me, and I did not read the entire article, so maybe there was mention of this there, but, it appears to me that criminalization of mental illness feeds the growth of privatized prisons.

Is bad enough that this Country has For Profit Prisons to begin with, however making money off of people with mental health issues is really low.....these people need help, not incarceration.

If we had a Universal Health Care system, perhaps there would be less need for so many prisons. Oh yes, that is right, would cut into their money making machine. See how this works people? Start voting wisely, defend all rights of all people, because by doing so you not only make it a better Country to live in but are defending your own rights as well.

Vulture Capitalism and doing away with the commons and privatizing everything places less in our control and more in the Capitalist control who do not give a care about you or I at all, only that we can make them money somehow. And that somehow they could care less what it is.

Signed. Thanks, Dandelion. This is just heartbreaking. I watched all three videos, and it was worth the time. This system must be changed. Police and other professionals need to receive crisis intervention training. Some of these injustices are a result of ignorance, and others are a result of cruelty. Police should be subjected to psychiatric testing before they are hired. It's ridiculous that we are paying corporations to run prisons in this abusive manner, anyway. Prisons should never be privatized. This kind of thing should never go on, and if we would stop wasting resources and fund mental health treatment, mentally ill people would receive the respect, compassion, and help they deserve.

I was also very upset because the woman that shows on the front of the video not only deals with her mental illness but now she and many others have felonies on their records. Her victim didn't have to be a victim if she had received mental health care. Everyone in this situation loses including the taxpayers whose taxes have are not paying for correct treatment.

I'm glad that little by little both Parties are beginning to realize that mental health treatment can't be swept under the carpet and ignored. President Obama has asked for more funding into the mental health for gun violence and Christie, Hillary, and others are hearing about the large drug problem and the lack of beds to treat these people's addictions. Bernie Sanders has long advocated for all of this and more by pushing for a truly Universal Health Care system.

Yes. I think a Universal or Global Health Care System is what is required. Doesn't matter where you live, human problems can be broadly categorized as the same, with regional / national / international variations.

If everyone paid into these systems, they would then be capable of benefiting everyone. One would not need private health care, as everyone would be catered for.

When Reagan was governor of California, the mental hospitals were being closed around the country. He was more than happy to jump on the bandwagon. We NEED mental health facilities, not more prisons. Waiting until the person commits a crime, and then incarcerating them, makes no sense at all (unless, of course, it's the Rabid Right and they're profiting from it). Noted and signed. Thanks, Dandelion.

It is so shameful that people with mental health issues are stigmatized, here in the UK there are cases of the police arresting people with a mental health problem and then putting them in a cell, they are coping with enough without being Darren said in Victorian times mental illness was like being a leper and in some ways it's not moved on much. It's so much easier to hand out drugs than give support and treatment, the cut backs in the UK have caused much suffering to mentally ill people. The police should be trained in understanding the problems that people have before they go gun ho and throw them in a prison cell. I felt sad to see people dealing with their own demons and being treated as a criminal...Thank you Sheryl ...

Signed a few petitions and shared. Remember watching a few hour symposium on mh months ago. The situation of diagnosis, treatment, care and follow up is virtually non-existent for too many. The professionals on the panel were sad and depressed as they feel their resources have no funding or any type of commitment/provision to essentially begin to help those who need/want attention. So, vote Bernie in or we'll have more of the same which I've said elsewhere today.
