Not only did the police show up but they brought a large waste management truck and forced the homeless to throw away their food, pillows and other items that were just donated by local activists.

as long as police forces around the country continue to shoot minorities and dogs without fear of repercussion or prosecution and continue to harass the homeless instead of helping then the police around this country deserve no respect from decent citizens. those individual police officers who are decent and caring individuals and who are tired of seeing what was once an honorable profession turned into this need to stand up for what's right and not continue to hide behind "I'm just following orders".

Talk about being Grinches! This is uncalled for. The police need to be held accountable for destroying the homeless people's property. There needs to be a petition about this to bring more attention to this situation. It will only get worse as the Super Bowl approaches.

I fully agree. People that are nearest or part of the problem need to step up and speak out do something, as they say, if you are not part of the solution you are part of the problem. Those who do step up need to have their backs covered by other "good" cops - as I hear there are more good than not. So if one steps up others need to join him or her.

People also need to vote out those who would pass such laws or ordinances of not feeding the hungry and homeless. While that is being done, police should ignore such stupid rules. I don't see anyone going after all the ones on Wall Street that has caused a lot of the hunger.

Shame on Houston-shame on Texas. It's just plain wrong. Where's the compassion+humanity...here in Toronto it's the very opposite where extra shelters open up when it gets very cold+groups go around incl cops to see if there's anything they can do plus they also hand out knapsacks filled with winter goods+provide them with public transit tokens too. UGLY on Houston. Shared thx Dandelion

Someone needs to calmly walk into the Houston Police Dept. and ask kindly for a list of items they may give to the homeless and a list of things they may not give to the homeless. Have it stamped and dated before you leave. Take it to the ACLU - and media. Find out what the protocol is for Homeless people is for every town a C2 lives in. Compare - consolidate - give it to your state Senator. ?

How disgusting -- taking food and clothing from people who have nothing! The attitude that the food could be unsafe at least makes sense in some abstract way, but taking blankets and clothing???

The solution to our ever more unequal economy seems to be to just push the people that aren't the "winners" out of sight instead of fixing the economy.

Sheryl G (359)
Thursday December 29, 2016, 8:28 pm
Not only out of sight Bryan, even when they hide in the woods and such I've read more stories where they are sought out and their little camps destroyed. I suppose as you said in some abstract way concerning the food I don't think that people who are having nothing to eat have a lot of choices. Which would bring us back to the point why should anyone be in this Country hungry. There is more than enough, at the very least a safe place to eat should be available to all. And that is the very least.......this Country should not have homeless either.........if the billionaires would part with a few coins and allow people some living wages or an increase in their fixed incomes. Services to help those people to get onto their feet or the medical help they need.

Thanks you Patrick for the encouragement.......I try to keep plugging along but sometimes it gets the better of me, so thanks.

This is absolutely sickening. How is this not stealing? Can you just come up to anyone and make them discard things within their possession? Being homeless does not make you have no right to own anything, does it? The cruelty and stupidity of this action is just beyond belief.

It sounds like the city of Rio is no better than Houston, with their deplorable "clean the streets" program. I wish overprivileged people who have no compassion could just spend a couple of days as homeless people. They are so far removed from reality that they don't even act like human beings anymore. Thanks Dandelion.

This is cruel beyond cruel! Shame, shame, fifty thousand times shame on the Houston Police Department. The brutes that participated in this heartless action are not constables, they are gestapo, not fit to clean the excrement out of K-9 kennels. They are meaner than 99.999% of all fictional villains. Any cop who has an atom of goodness in his/her being would resign rather than participate in what amounts to theft.

Absolutely disgusting!!!

I wonder how many of the officers claim to be Christians? They obviously did not understand Matthew 25:40
40The King will reply, Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.

I seem to recall a 90 year old man in Florida who was feeding the homeless when he arrested by police. I know we had a similar situation in Abbotsford a while back. We are called to be our brother's keeper, and it is not just Christians. The Qu'ran also makes similar admonitions to Muslims.

Only in Amerika- land of the formerly free. So...who paid for the dumpsters? taxpayers. Who paid for the cops to harass homeless ? taxpayers.
Someone has an axe to grind about the Christmas giveaway, and complained.
I tried to give away sweaters during Occupy Santa Rosa. A meterman (male metermaid?) in his little golf cart told me to keep moving-threatened citation...no other cars on the street, about 5 homeless on the sidewalk. I told him I wasn't "parked" just couldn't walk up the steps to the people. (They did come to the car... boy, was mister "authority" pissed off. )
Give some people power and they become president.
This is just the beginning.

By: Derrick Broze / The Anti-Media Houston, TX – On Thursday, the Houston Police Department targeted a group of homeless advocates who were attempting to hand out hot food and gifts to the homeless.

Local activists attempting to hand out food and gifts were shocked on Thursday afternoon when Houston police forced the homeless to throw away the donations. Around 1 pm on Thursday, several individuals met in downtown Houston to distribute plates of hot food, blankets, and other supplies to the city’s growing homeless population. Soon after, Houston police arrived on the scene of two different intersections where the homeless advocates were giving out gifts and food.

According to witness testimony posted on Facebook, the police instructed the homeless to throw away everything they had been given. “Not only were the police called, but they brought a large waste management truck and are forcing the homeless to throw away their food, pillows and other items,” reads one post.

A video from an ABC13 social media correspondent shows the police and trash vehicle parked under a freeway while a man narrates the situation. “Covers, Blankets, different things like that, pillows. They are throwing all of that away,” he says.

Shere Dore, a local activist who works with several organizations, including Food Not Bombs Houston, was involved in the food sharing and says the throwing away of the gifts was uncalled for. “I’m highly disturbed because lots of these items were not only given to the homeless by the community, but some of the blankets and jackets were literally purchased by homeless advocates like myself,” Dore told Anti-Media. “HPD and the City of Houston are taking our cash and throwing it in the trash. At what point will our police stand up and say that this is wrong to do to people?“

Only moments before throwing away the gifts, the Houston police stopped Dore and a fellow advocate. Dore said her friend was taking photos of the police vehicle when the officer began questioning them, claiming someone had called and complained about people feeding the homeless".

Signed Freya's petition few days ago. Makes you wonder what the world is coming to. Politicians make these unjust laws and expect to get pats on the back, when good kick up were the sun don't shine is far more practicable. It is winter you would think these sort of people would help giving them some sort of shelter in unoccupied buildings, they have plenty.

Instead of jail that the taxpayers would have to pay, why can't we get some affordable housing and staff the office with some professionals to see to it that the place runs smoothly. Would be far cheaper and a lot more kinder.

Thanks for keeping this to the fore Dandelion..... how ironic we had a private discussion about this while I couldn't access my page.......Glad many Aussie's have a better attitude towards their homeless although we are not perfect by any means.....for those that are "worried" about giving money because it will "go on booze, ciggies and drugs" or if you are afaid to get "too close" just in case that homeless person has "issues mental or otherwise"........Give Where You Live.......that's a drive we have locally....donate toothpaste, toothbrushes, personal hygiene products, underwear/socks, dog food, water bowls, etc...support local organisations that are on the streets doing what they can......to help.......call out those that aren't......as the Salvos say here "most people are only a paypacket way from homelessness" and who can forget this article that was put on Care2: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-08-23/mobile-shower-van-for-homeless-hits-the-streets-of-brisbane/7775250 Petition signed Many thanks Freya.

This is what it is like to live in The-Most-Fascist-State-In-The-Union. Our state Senators and Reps claim -in very loud fashion- to be 'Christian'.....does THIS look or is an action of, 'Christians'??? They are not Christians, peeps, they are MAMMONITES. They worship Mammon and do not give 3/5ths of a damn for anyone or anything save themselves and their pockets. Period. Anyone who helps the poor, the homeless, the elderly or the very young do so clandestinely, in secret, in hiding. THAT is what it is now like here and so, the rest of the nation will soon find out exactly what it's like to live under Fanatical, Theocratic FASCISM. All you Trumphiles, who voted for this crap.....remember....IT'S WHAT YOU WANTED.
