It Is Time to Start Calling Evangelicals What They Are: The American Taliban

Their mandate engages them in a zero sum game to convert the country, indeed the whole world, to their faith. And over the decades they have increasingly reached for more and more political power to achieve this goal. This is exactly what ISIS proposes.

We should all be able to choose which faith we follow, not be forced into it.

Yes, ANY delusional system that has cultural support will believe "IT" has all the answers. Any Theocrasy is a dangerous thing! And, it can be usurped by the next religious newcomer!

All extremism can be dangerous and it is even riskier when it taps into core beliefs people hesitate questioning. Thanks Dandelion

Separation of church and state means exactly what it says. Some people don't understand this and others don't respect it. In our country, we are supposed to be free to choose or reject religion on our own. No matter whether a religion is beneficial or not, fanatical or not, it has no place in government. The Taliban is a good example of what can happen in governments when this critical separation does not occur. There are some very dangerous sects of Christianity that are infiltrating our government now, and we must be vigilant and aware that this is going on. Some of these people, as you say Dandelion, want the entire world to convert to their religion. Some of these people would even be happy if the entire world blew up in a big religious war.

Sheryl our branch of the faith has had several martyrs, burned or hanged by fundamental Christians .Remember Servetus, he was burned at the stake at the instigation of Calvin He claimed Jesus as the Son of the eternal God and not thew Eternal Son.That cost him his life. Calvin and his cline in their day, were every bit as bigoted and cruel as the Taliban today. I can't put your evangelists in the same category .I disagree with their fundamentalism .They may have narrow views and closed minds but theyare not cruel

They intend to get there Walter, give them an inch they'll take a mile. They are trying to position themselves in every position of power and bit by bit changing our laws to reflect their "religious" ideals. Once they have all seats of power covered, be it elected, courts, police etc then they will start the final dominionism they want. It allows them to kill gays for one thing, women will be in full control of their views by the males so forget about having the right to chose anything if one is female.

So today no, they are not doing the full outrageousness that some other religious sects are doing, but give them time - they are certainly pushing us there. Perhaps not as bad in Australia but it is getting bad over here.

Sorry I'm not well versed with Servetus, as I follow the spiritual ways of the Native American over here so I've not studied your faith in depth. What I do know in all these major religions though is extremists do not want anyone to have a right to their own ways of spiritual life, my people already know that with Christian faith pushed down our throats - or at least my ancestors. Extremist are dangerous be they Christianity or Islamic or anything else. Best to be careful.

I post things that I know is not always comfortable - but we need to keep our eyes open else we become just as blind as the ones we point our fingers at.

They are pushy and aggravating but calling them a terrorist organization is going a bit too far. I don't know of many evangelicals running trucks into crowds of people and blowing up bombs at children's concerts like one of the 3 muslim attacks in the last 10 weeks in England. Their Koran says they get special favors in Heaven for killing during Ramadan. Sick! Most of our Christians in the south avoid evangelicals because they are aggravating but we don't have to worry about them killing groups of people every week. They do believe like the rest of us that thou shalt not kill. Taliban... I don't think so. Pushy... Yes.

John if that statement includes Unitarians,I suggest you do a little study. Like most Unitarians .I accept all faiths that teach compassion love ,tolerance and gentleness as paths to what they believe is their ultimate destiny My wife is a Buddhist and my close family includes Jews and Catholics .I accept their right to their beliefs.

How Thomas Jefferson Created His Own Bible
http://www.smithsonianmag.com/arts-culture/how-thomas-jefferson-created-his-own-bible-5659505/

Jefferson was devoted to the teachings of Jesus Christ. But he didn’t always agree with how they were interpreted by biblical sources, including the writers of the four Gospels, whom he considered to be untrustworthy correspondents. So Jefferson created his own gospel by taking a sharp instrument, perhaps a penknife, to existing copies of the New Testament and pasting up his own account of Christ’s philosophy, distinguishing it from what he called “the corruption of schismatizing followers.”

Much of the material Jefferson elected to not include related miraculous events, such as the feeding of the multitudes with only two fish and five loaves of barley bread; he eschewed anything that he perceived as “contrary to reason.” His idiosyncratic gospel concludes with Christ’s entombment but omits his resurrection. He kept Jesus’ own teachings, such as the Beatitude, “Blessed are the peace-makers: for they shall be called the children of God.”

GingerAway, we've killed far more innocents than they have.

I remember an interview with a Palestinian from decades ago. He said that the West drops bombs from airplanes and calls it war. He said Palestinians cannot afford airplanes so they carry the bombs themselves and the West calls it terrorism.

The only people bombing children's concerts in western society are muslims and palestinians keep taking over other's territory. They originated in Saudi Arabia. All other countries were taken over by them. They will not stop until they establish a world wide caliphate. They take 4 wives starting at age 6 and start having children with them at age 9 so they outnumber civilized people and infiltrate politics to over run our civilized law and rights. If you want your children living under sharia then keep supporting them. There is no comparison of safety in USA to any muslim overrun society. I would like to know, however, where the elites think their children will live in safety when USA, Australia, and New Zealand is muslim. Or are they just not worried about it??? Stupid globalist. Maybe they will take all their money and a space suit to Mars. Good luck keeping their veggie gardens and animals in space suits!

Bottomline I don't want killers and child rapists in my society. This is not a religion but it IS a death cult. Europe is finding that out right now. If they don't rise up soon. Europeans will be dead for not converting to muslim and sharia. If you're so keen on it take your children to a muslim area and live. I'll bet none of you do that.

. Wayne W you probably knew that Thomas Jefferson was a non church attending Unitarian He was a good role model for all Americans. ................................................................................. . Ginger Away I agree with your definition of islam I cannot accept it as a religion .It is not a religion it is an evil cult .It contradicts and negates the ethical teachings of all religions ...

Read the koran and know the evil muslims are pushing. Native American children were treated badly, taken away from their parents at school age and put into schools where many were badly abused to get the Indian out of them. No one condones this that I know and it sickens me. It is not accepted and not what Jesus teaches in our Christian religion. I understand the generational problems these freakish nuns and priests caused and this should be condemned and is by those of us who know about it. Every people, race and creed have committed horrible crimes against humanity but is not widely accepted today. Muslims are the only ones accepting and worshipping this kind of thing. Allah is evil.

Bottom line; extremism is not compatible with healthful human life.

Recognize and check the signs of this behavior in yourself and others, (this post serves that spirit, thank you Dandelion) alternatively be condemned to an impoverished, narrow view and miss out on the experience of the abundant riches and wonders this life and world have to offer. Enjoy the blessings.

Ginger away - you're on an Islamophobic roll - and your "facts" about Islam & the Quran are extremely (extremistly) inaccurate. Did you know that Arab Christians pray to "Allah" - just as French pray to "Dieu" - because "Allah happens to be the Arabic word for "God"? Allah is not the name of a god.

Right now, an extremist movement has grown up that flies a "religious identity" that is rejected by a large majority of Muslims. Walter is correct to use the label "cult" for this movement. (Unfortunately, from the comment, & other comments, I suspect he tends to conflate the religion and this cult of Talibans, Daesh etc - being totally unaware of the extent that Judaic & Christian ethics were the starting point & were adopted into Islamic values. I hope I'm wrong in understanding that he condemns Islam as a whole.)

In the US, many white supremacists are also (extremist) evangelicals - and they are already out killing those who don't match their idea of the "chosen". There have been a number of incidents in the last few months (I think Portland was the latest, but as this isn't headline material I might have missed more recent ones.).

Three years ago, there were rare extremist events in the West.
Unless, of course, one includes what Western allies have been doing to civilians in the Middle East (including Afghanistan & NW Pakistan).

From the civilian victims' perspective, sending a drone in on a village marriage isn't all that different from taking in a truck ... except the killers in the first case don't kill themselves.

It's not so long ago that in Central Europe, Catholics (Croats) were massacring Orthodox (Serbs) & vice versa - massively. Less than 25 years ago. That didn't mean that they represented Catholicism or Orthodox Christianity. But both were led by extremists. (And underlying the leadership were economic & political interests.) A little before that, it was Catholics & Protestants in the British Isles.

Self-righteous condemnation of others slides one towards an extremist mindset - with blinders preventing one from recognising all that one actually has in COMMON with the larger community of "others" (NOT those extremists whose actions.

And Marco - I fully agree - extremism is not compatible with healthful human life.

I agree, Dandelion - it is when one sees the early symptoms of extremism taking root that one needs to start being alert & ready to bring the danger out into the light. Whether the signs are in ourselves, or in others. Thanks for (yet again) opening an uncomfortable but necessary discussion

See what happens when people simply read LITERALLY some of the text in these religious / spiritual tomes. . . they then interpret THAT as being gospel truth.

So, Eve REALLY DID *talk* to a snake in the Garden of Eden. . . ?

Jihad IS AN *Inner battle/struggle* with one's self. If you read the blather of Islamic Fundamentalists, and believe it, you're feeding into their evil Sect/Cult narrative.

I LIVE in a city with a large Muslim population, and have a Muslim for a neighbor.

Good points Darren. Good video Evelyn a suggested viewing for all. Extremist under any heading is just what it implies, extremism, which is not what most Christians nor Muslims do - go to extremes or take certain things as literal.
