In short, we were sneaky and polite Trojan horses; we had an agenda. Yes, even as 15-year-olds. It was forcefully handed to us by the adults in our lives who had been preparing for this since before we were born.

This is scarey and I've read other articles. This is very clear, this is written by someone who grew up in it so has had an insider view.

They think America was founded on conservative Protestant ideals because that’s what they’ve been fed, because that’s what aligns with their interpretation of the Bible and they will not go down without a fight.

A single powerful person who is convinced of their own Rightness with no thought of introspection is dangerous. We now have a government full of them.

And as much as I dislike Trump I'm more concerned with Mike Pence and if Trump is removed we end up with Trump. That is why I'm not signing any petitions to remove Trump from Office. I might if we get up to another election, perhaps a year away. But Donald can be manipulated to a point but Pence is on a real mission, and he is more dangerous.

We best get our ducks in a row fast, the groups better come together, the environmentalist, the minorities, free thinkers, gays, anyone that is considered "other" by the Fundamentalist Right. They've been working on this for decades to get to this point - this is no joke.

Please read the article.

Well it got a big boost to oppose the 60's counterculture, of anti-war,non-materialism, non-theistic eastern religion, feminism, and environmentalism. Given the CIA's use of religious fanaticism and evangelical relationship with blackwater I can imagine a marriage made in amoral heaven.
The country however was founded in separation of church and state and secularism to prevent religious war such as between the evangelical and the supposed one true religion of which they may in product infringement. But that may wait until they marginalize all other faiths. I'm sure they aren't the only ones going into this election to gain control of the Supreme Court for a generation.
It is easy to start such thing and very hard to stop them as we have seen in Afghanistan as if we actually want it to stop.
The unholy alliance was on against communism, they actually used that with Islamic official for a red scare over Mossedegh in Iran as you know nationalizing oil is communist( not th BP wasn't nationalized too back then)..
Oh and the 60's and home and private schools was also driven by desegregation.
I can imagine religious morality squads just like in the Middle_East before long.

This version of the fundamentalist Christian right are basically a sect/cult. Very dangerous. Based on a diluted literal understanding of Biblical texts, which is amusing because even the literal Christ in the Bible, being born in the Middle East, would have been non-white.

Hmmm, then again what would you expect after the 60s where we treated our homecoming troops like dirt...and still do? The 60s produce a counterculture, of anti-war, ant-theistic and anti respect group that needed to be de-frocked as it were. The key words here are home schooled, and protestant religions (mostly store front or mega churches) that parlayed a huge opportunity. We have known a local group like this and they are scary but while they are fully able, willing and trying to overpopulate the planet, they steadfastly refuse to defend our country. It's the odd ball sect member who joins the military.

Terrifying. These creeps have already gotten Pence literally a heartbeat from the Oval Office. Trump is no good, but as one of my Trekkie friends pointed out, Trump is Harry Mudd while Pence is Khan. (If you don't understand the references, look 'em up.) If we get rid of Trump, it could be out of the frying pan and into the fire. All the more reason to get out the Progressive vote. All the more reason to resist and persist. All the more reason to get politically active as all-get-out.

I know a lot of atheists who grew up in very religious households. Many atheists tell me that reading the Bible is what led them to abandon religion altogether.

There seem to be a number of these "Christofascists" waking up and witnessing about the kind of brain-washing they received ... another such article was posted here a few weeks ago.

But how many are there, "sleepers" in communities who haven't woken but just sleepwalk through their assigned intolerant extremist fanatical tasks?

Thanks all for the insightful comments. Just a reminder to John G. not all who protested the war treated those returning home like dirt. Many protested for the very fact of getting them out of there so they didn't end up in a pine box or suffering from missing limbs and PTSD. It is unfortunate that too many troops have that image of a less than stellar homecoming, but there were others who did not have that experience. The lesson the antiwar people learned is one can be against the war but not the soldier and so hard lessons are learned but I believe that had the many people not stood up to the Vietnam War we might still be there as we seem to be remaining forever in Afghanistan and Iraq.

I do not recall ever being treated like dirt by the counter culture when I returned home in 1971. I do recall an open exchange of different ideas, sometimes heated always interesting and peaceful. I suppose some would consider that being treated like dirt. I call it being treated as an American.

Good afternoon and thank you for this article - which I read and noted- scary -neither pence nor trump are good for AMERICA- we need to find away to get rid of both thru impeachment - or catching them in perjury- sincerely KAY M.

That was terrifying! In the comments one person asks how best to reach people to counteract this thinking.
If you hit 'reply' under that, there is a long, intelligent post from 'Kurt', who got out of this movement. Well worth reading.

Truly, I think it started with Reagan. He's the one they all call "St. Ronnie", and he's the one who started the breakdown of our constitution and our culture. As with Pence, he was a governor first, and not necessarily a good one at that. However, the radical Christian Right loved/loves them both. Thanks for sharing this article, Dandelion, even though it is scary. Unfortunately, it's very true and we need to be prepared.

So many organizations for the environment, the people, and others which I support send me petitions to sign to encourage the impeachment of Donald Trump. I won't do it. I will not support President Trump's impeachment. I do not want Mike Pence to be President. The article refers to Trump as a tyrant. I'm not so sure I would go that far. If you think Trump is the tyrant, wait until Pence takes over. No thank you.

Remember, Bill Clinton was impeached; but, he was not removed from office. Even if Trump got impeached, that doesn't mean he would be removed.

Be careful what you wish for.

I would love to see Pence replace Trump as president. Why should I be more worried about right-wingers getting involved with the governmental process than I would be about left-wingers? They all have their good beliefs and their bad ones.

My brother n law came back from Nam with severe PTSD. He killed himself. It was his own devils. That being said. Pence is a Creationist. The earth is 6000 years old. I can not imagine a future with either of these deluded people in charge of out future..
