The Trump Opioid Betrayal

This is something that Trump could have done independent of Congress! He says This is a national emergency and it is. Boom. End of discussion. There is no conceivable reason why he should not do this except he does not give a care about the people of USA

From the article:

Remember when Donald Trump was going to solve the opioid crisis? It was one of the few promises he made that we actually found believable. After all, “fewer people should die from prescription drugs” is a pretty easy policy to get behind. And when you consider that Trump’s brother Freddy suffered and ultimately died from substance abuse– alcohol, specifically- you could almost see a future where The Donald could reconnect with humanity. That on this issue, maybe only this issue, he could actually make policy based on life experiences that the rest of us have.

500,000 people have died from drug overdoses between 2010 and 2015. For reference, 407,000 US soldiers died in World War II. 3,412 Americans have died as a result of terrorism, either overseas or abroad, between 2001 and 2014; over 440,000 died during that same period from gun violence.

Ours is a preeminently violent country, but in less than half the amount of time mentioned above, opioid and drug overdoses killed 113% more people than gun violence. Surely, surely President Trump would declare a national emergency, to help cut the red tape and get resources to the health services that need them!

Trump’s response?

Essentially, “Nah.”

In Germany there was a scandal in case of the contrary. A well-known pharmacist pounded the medications for cancer patients, who then either received far too low doses of medication or completely ineffective medications. Such a thing can not be punished hard enough. One will never know how many people had to die because of this.

Trump's response is an indicator of his ignorance about the nature of addiction. Unfortunately, this kind of ignorance is widespread among our population and our leaders. Just because he doesn't know what he's doing, though, that doesn't stop Trump from blundering ahead. In keeping with the quality of the rest of his cabinet, HHS Sec. Tom Price seems pretty clueless as well.

If you can afford to blow 2:17 of your time, watch this ridiculous video the White House put out to introduce us to Tom Price. He seems pretty vapid:

Meet the Cabinet: Secretary Tom Price

If these guys had any sense they would be seeking out advice from such experts as the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA). There is a wealth of research out there, with more being done all the time. Instead of declaring a national emergency and making a concrete effort to address it, such as making an attempt to look at best practices and such, Trump and Price seem content with spouting political rhetoric. That, and throwing poor people who can't afford pricey treatments into jail. I hope Price is doing more than he appears to be doing. We will see.

I just thought of something else, too. Just wait until doctors cut way back on opioid prescriptions, and a heroin epidemic grows in its place. Opium production is booming in Afghanistan, so that may be the next mess we will find ourselves in.

Thanks Judy, I watched video could he say "around the world" one more time. Yet he's learned nothing about their Universal Health Care programs that are "around the world" - how much we can do for them, well how about what we can do here for ourselves; oh yes, you slipped in repeal the Affordable Care Act without having mentioned the words. Shaking head.

So what Homer - run a campaign then do absolutely nothing of what you stated. I didn't write the article but I do call out the politicians, no matter who they are, when they make promises and people voted for him due to it.

We have a serious issue going on with this and while our schools are being cut back in all sorts of places it is hard for them to supply books for basic studies. Some schools try to offer drug education programs then others don't and that is one thing Trump could do - is begin a campaign to educate the public, just like you said.
