appeal to all cat lovers to demand from the head of Catholic Church to issue an official apology for the millions of innocent animal lives lost as the result of human ignorance and cruelty. [Not only cats; other animals were executed as being "diabolic".]

During the Middle Ages, it is an ABSOLUTE FACT that animals were EXECUTED for "Witchcraft" - after a "Fair Trial", of course, with a Judge, Lawyers, and everything. The very fine French film, "La Sorciere", had a scene where a Lawyer was preparing to go to Court to defend a PIG from the charge of Witchcraft - the pig lost. And was executed for its "crime". This is absolute historical fact, that the film was based on.

Witches had "animal familiars", helpers of course sent by the Devil Himself to keep an eye on them. Usually a Black Cat, but they could be any kind of an animal companion.

Of course the Pope is never going to apologize - but, heck, I signed the Petition anyway. Take it seriously, or not - it's your choice.
[Animals which had been subjected to Bestiality, were also EXECUTED - it was the LAW. I think that also related to the idea of "Witchcraft" and the "Devil"...]
At least it's good to be EDUCATED about this painful subject...

"During the last few decades Catholic Church issued several dozens of official apologies for their mistakes of the pasts. We all appreciate this. Unfortunately, to this day, the issue of torturing and killing millions of cats during several centuries, known as the “dark age,” has never been raised.

As cats cannot raise this issue, I appeal to all cat lovers to demand from the head of Catholic Church to issue an official apology for the millions of innocent animal lives lost as the result of human ignorance and cruelty."

Did you ever wonder why Black Cats were associated with Witches at Halloween?
Well, wonder no more...

Pope Francis - the first Pope to be named after St. Francis, the Friend of the Animals.
I wonder how literally, how seriously, he takes that...
[The Name possibly gave the idea for this Petition...]

As a lot of us know, [Catholic] Spain has a number of horrific local rituals, involving animal torture [even aside from bullfighting], that are also held on "Saints' Days" [altho possibly originally Pagan in origin]. The [previous] Popes have been appealed to, to stop or to condemn them - to no avail, so far.
Just mentioning that...

Pope Francis took his name from St. Francis of Assisi, right? As in the patron saint of animals? Surely he would want to apologize for the wanton, depraved cruelty perpetrated down through the centuries against these innocent animals. Even an atheist like me understands that.

I can't get into the site to sign at the moment, but the moment I can, I WILL sign. Thanks! I don't think the catholic church realises the damage that their past blunders have done to them as a church. It has put so many thousands of people against Christianity as they seem to always equate Christianity with the Catholic church as it is always in the media for doing terrible things so it is the only image they see so THINK that that is Christianity!! ! This pope seems to be much more 'on the ball' than the others and so maybe there is a chance that he will realise that apologising for disgusting crimes his church has committed, like this one might be very healing. People need to realise that if Jesus was here today he would be totally horrified at the cruelty that humans inflict on animals. He made it quite clear that God watches over even the little sparrows! The more attrocities that are made public and public apologies made, the sooner we can move on into the future with a new hope of a good world for animals.

I signed and noted before reading the comments and I just wanted to say one more thing. I sign many petitions on behalf of the galgos in Spain and the surrounding areas. These poor greyhounds are tortured and treated so horrendously that it boggles the mind or mine anyway. I just recently found out the reason they are treated so badly and it has to do with the "good luck" these idiot hunters think they will gain for the next hunting season. Reading this petition and some of the comments, I would bet the practice stems back to the damn church.

One estimate is that 9 million "witches" were killed during the "burning times" in Europe. In many different ways, including hanging and drowning and being tortured to death, besides burning. They were mostly women - not necessarily older women, but any age - but also included children {!!!} and a few men, mainly Gay men. And, of course, ANIMALS were accused, formally tried in Court, and executed {by hanging, as far as I know}.
If you were of the family of a witch, that could be enough to condemn you. If you didn't denounce a witch, you could be accused yourself. It got so bad that, if you were A WOMAN, you would be accused of being a witch - the two were considered practically synonymous!
Once accused, that was IT - few escaped. Torture made almost everyone confess - but if you DIDN'T confess, it was because the Devil wouldn't allow you to! So it was lose-lose...
Any "companion animal" was named a "witches' familiar" and was considered a Devil itself, or from the Devil - the essential MEANS of working the Evil Magic. This "familiar" could be anything from a cat, to a domestic animal, to a tamed wild animal - even a hedgehog!
Witches were executed in North America not only in Salem, but in Boston. The last "witch" was executed in Scotland in the early 1700s. Increasing Rationality and Science and the Age of Reason {which was anti-religion and anti-the Catholic Church} had everything to do with this.
9 million is one estimate of the number of Women killed - martyred - but there can be no real estimate of the number of animals, just that many were cherished by their accused-and-doomed families. Both figures must be mind-boggling, when you think about it.

I should have put it, "the last witch EXECUTION was in Scotland in the early 1700s".

That is obviously not "the last witch". Just the last one to suffer an unjust death at the hands of Church-and-State combined.

I wonder what the church would say to a baptised cat? A cat I had years ago, Muffin, went to youth group with me at the request of the kids. They thought she was great . . . I think she liked all the attention. One Friday evening, unbeknownst to me, they arranged for one of the church pastors to baptised her. They gathered in the chapel and Muffin was baptised by the pastor. As the kids said, we can't have a heathen cat as a member of a Christian youth group.

As Margaret G. stated in a discussion on a different site:
The modern Witch-hunts are the Stalking and Murdering of Abortion Providers.
[I am paraphrasing her post.]

There are also, as I mentioned above, STILL "Festivals" held on "Saints' Days" of the Catholic Church, in Spain and I believe in Portugal also, in some rather backwards villages, where animals are tortured ritually in horrible ways, also to "bring good luck" or "because it's tradition" or whatever excuse.
Previous Popes were appealed to, to condemn these - they ARE religion-connected, after all, altho probably dating back to older antiquity - but to no avail.

Perhaps Pope Francis will see fit to live up to his name - he TALKS a good game, let's see what he actually DOES. Like Pam, I'm not holding my breath... but we will see.
Don't forget to sign the Petition!

Maybe Pope Francis should be asked to condemn the taking of captive Cetaceans {to be displayed and exploited at Dolphinariums, Sea Worlds, and the like}.
Maybe there needs to be another Petition for that...

It's always been my understanding that Europe suffered greatly from this policy in increased transmission of flea-borne diseases by rats. Yes, I know it was not all cats, but there were a lot of cats, also dogs including rat-catching breeds. Not that that is any excuse not to apologize. "We already suffered enough" doesn't hack it.

Time and again I read that the massacre of cats helped the Bubonic Plague and other epidemics. Because no cats were around to slay rats, the rodents multiplied like mad, and their fleas easily jumped onto humans to spread disease.

Pope Francis is, to me anyway, the Un-Pope, quite different from many - if not all - of his predecessors. If anyone can issue an apology - albeit a symbolic one - to cat kind, he can!

Hokay - live and learn -while I had heard of animals "accused of witchcraft" tried and found "guilty" and HUNG during the Middle Ages, I had not heard before of animals being BURNED AT THE STAKE - but, doing some more research, as a result of all the attention this posting is getting! - NOW I KNOW.

WARNING: CAT LOVERS WILL NOT WANT TO READ FURTHER. But in the interests of information, however horrible:
'Cat-burning was also described in The Great Cat Massacre, a scholarly work by American historian Robert Darnton:
"Cats also figured in the cycle of Saint John the Baptist, which took place on June 24, at the time of summer solstice. Crowds made bonfires, jumped over them, danced around them, and threw into them objects with magical power, hoping to avoid disaster and obtain good fortune during the rest of the year. A favorite object was cats - cats tied up in bags, cats suspended from ropes, or cats burned at stake...."'

There's a lot more in Wikipedia, but I have said enough here.
The Church certainly has a lot {that I didn't even know about!} to apologize for...
[And it STILL DOES, with regard to OTHER animal-torture "Festivals" still going on, even if not with cats...!]

Bette-Ann Libin (11)

Catholics can confess their sins into eternity! NOTHING will ever justify such UNETHICAL and MORALLY CORRUPT animal cruelty coupled with mass fear and heinous murder practices the likes of which Witches were/are accused!

Gloria H (88)
Wednesday October 30, 2013, 4:37 pm
yes, all the thinly disguised "festivals" involving setting fire to bulls horns, etc (Spain) have their roots in superstition circulated and the fires fanned by the Catholic church. About freaking time the Pope pulls his flock of um..believers...into this century...and denounces all these events. Put HIS feet to the fire so to speak.
RIP all beings who suffered in the name of celebrating forgiveness of HUMAN sin by the being hanging on the cross. I doubt Christ would have sanctioned any of the murders.

And supposing they apologize? What good is it going to do for the cats now? Shows you how rotten to the core certain people are. And another thing, who is going to apologize to the millions of today's euthanized cats who sat in "shelters" because of the cruelty, stupidity and indifference of PEOPLE????? What about the millions in that situation as we speak?

If you are interested in looking things up - the reference in Wikipedia is, to {ugh!} "cat-burning". That entry gives references to SEVERAL Historical texts.
"The Great Cat Massacre", the book, altho it does refer to other instances, mainly is about ONE instance - that does, however, relate to witchcraft. This is if you want to pursue this any further. It's good to know the past to understand the present.
Know that these insane "rituals", could NOT HAVE TAKEN PLACE without the full Sanction of the Church - they were often on Church property or in front of the Church, and altho often pagan in origin - or just sadistic and "spontaneous" - they had religious trimmings of ritual, belief and imagery.

This is so far in the past - surely there are other issues to apologise for that are still within living memory. And how will affect the dead cats? Yes, it was horrible, but so were many other evil practices in those days.

Let's concentrate on fixing up some of the awful things that are still going on, or issues that people can still remember.

DaleLovesOttawa O (198)

So many lives, both feline, other animals and human have been sacrificed to satisfy the agendas of some. in the name of religion.

Julie W, this won't bring back the dead cats but perhaps they will rest a little easier knowing that acknowledgement of their senseless deaths will help to prevent any future practices and let us reflect on what can happen in a religious or even a political frenzy which is a threat to many.

One never knows when one can return to judgemental and ruthless times. Any animal or person hurt before needs to be acknowledged even if the crime happened long ago, no matter how many things today need to be fixed. We can't go forward without acknowledging the errors of the past.

Barbara V, spreading the news about neutering and spraying will help prevent homeless unwanted kittens in the future, teaching about responsible behaviour for the present day crop of people having companion animals also helps. Acknowledging past abuses will help prevent future abuses.

Don't anybody try to COVER UP for the Roman Catholic Church, that definitely bears a RESPONSIBILITY for these terrible happenings, that it could have stopped if it wanted to - just like it tried its darndest to stop Gay Sex {except among its priests}.
I mean, what's all this "don't LOOK at it, it's not important, it was so long ago"... the Roman Catholic Church is STILL following the archaic RULES it laid down, "so long ago".
If this is not of interest to you, good bye. We're not FORCING anybody! To me, ANY history is FASCINATING - and I've been interested in history of the Roman Catholic Church since I was 17 {and read what Voltaire had to say about it}.

How ironic that such horrific cruelty and superstitious ignorance can be attributed to religion, specifically the Catholic Church, a supposedly kind and caring institution. I am well aware that animals are not a top priority of any religion, but if such barbaric acts can be inflicted on the most helpless and voiceless species, just what other horrors have been perpetrated for centuries in the name of the Church? Will we ever know the whole truth?
