"Local screenings of Gasland contributed to anti-fracking mobilizations, which, in turn, affected the passage of local fracking moratoria," according to the study, which was authored by University of Iowa associate professor Ion Bogdan Vasi.

n Oscar-nominated HBO documentary that showed American homeowners near hydraulic fracturing sites setting fire to their tap water may have been the main trigger for a surge in public opposition to the oil and gas production technique, according to a study to be published next month.

Gasland, produced by the film-maker Josh Fox in 2010, sparked a rise in online searches, social media chatter, news coverage, and environmental activism surrounding fracking that may have led to a series of local attempts to ban the industry in the years that followed, according to the paper which will be published in the American Sociology Review’s October edition.

Fracking involves injecting sand, water and chemicals underground to crack open rock formations holding natural gas and oil – a technique that has led to a boom in US production and a slump in world energy prices.

Dozens of clashing studies have examined whether fracking contaminates water. The Environmental Protection Agency this year concluded a five-year study that said fracking does not pose widespread risk to groundwater but pointed out some cases of pollution.

Worries about water contamination and earthquakes led New York to pass a state-wide ban on fracking this year and several municipalities in other states like Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia and Texas to seek to impose local curbs.

“Local screenings of Gasland contributed to anti-fracking mobilizations, which, in turn, affected the passage of local fracking moratoria,” according to the study, which was authored by University of Iowa associate professor Ion Bogdan Vasi.

Researchers said they analyzed internet searches, Twitter posts, mass media coverage and activist mobilizations that focused on fracking at various points following the release of Gasland on TV channel HBO in June 2010.

They found spikes in activity immediately following the release, the film’s nomination for an Oscar in February 2011 and its various local screenings. The study said the documentary helped shift fracking “from a place of almost complete novelty” to “an established and contentious position”.

The oil and gas industry has criticized the film as misleading, stating there had been cases of residents in the Marcellus shale region having flammable tap water long before the fracking boom began there due to naturally occurring methane in underground aquifers.

[Oh ha ha ha! BMT]

Don't forget that HILLARY CLINTON AS SECRETARY OF STATE, WENT AROUND THE WORLD PROMOTING FRACKING, in fact, FORCING it upon many reluctant countries and governments, in spite of in many places, MASS PROTESTS AGAINST IT. Her State Department warned of "bad consequences" if the govts resisted the Corporations - in other words, she "made them an offer they couldn't refuse". With the whole power of the US govt behind it - and on OUR TAXPAYERS' MONEY.

Hillary Clinton also did THE SAME THING FOR GMOs while she was Secretary of State.....

Thanks BMutiny. So, when you tell the truth about how the 1% of controlling elitists are continuing their purposeful destruction of a planet and all living, you get put on a "Thorn-in-the-side list", but it isn't called that---it is called "The Terrorist List". Just a slight alteration in the meaning between being a thorn and a terrorist. Just a slight alteration in the punishment doled-out, if and when they come to get you. Just a little alteration in the ripple effect it causes, globally. I'm glad they're not my tailors, as they tailor everything on the planet to suit only themselves. Revolution is the only solution.

Also---Bravo for this movie and it's effect on most of the masses. An "Enlightening Storm", with flashes of truth emblazoned on the brain and thunderous roars of realization and revolution rumbling in the distance.

Ruffalo attracted the attention of Pennsylvania's Office of Homeland Security
when he organised screenings for Gasland, which won the special jury prize at this year's Sundance film festival, and said he was concerned about the impact of drilling on water supplies.
The actor has addressed the subject in the latest edition of American GQ. [Oh what a RABID RED RADICAL mag! Upscale consumer products for "Gentlemen"....]

Gasland, directed by Josh Fox, follows the film-maker as he visits communities in Pennsylvania where natural gas has been drilled. Fox decided to document his trip after a natural gas company wrote to him in 2008 offering to lease his family's land in Milanville, Pennsylvania for $100,000 (£64,000).

See, what the Fracking Industry's strategy is NOW, is,
TO GET TPP PASSED - and THEN, the FRACKING INDUSTRY WILL ACCORDING TO THE TERMS OF TPP,
be able to LEGALLY NULLIFY ALL the Local Ordinances by Cities, States and Communities, banning Fracking! EVEN THE LAWS MADE BY COUNTRIES.
"INTERNATIONAL TRADE LAWS" made by the Corporations, will be able to OVERRIDE EVEN THE LAWS OF NATIONS! [Such as Britain and Scotland, that are now considering banning Fracking altogether - and I believe Denmark has done this!]

And, THAT is why AT THIS PARTICULAR TIME, the Fracking Corporations ARE BEING PRO-ACTIVE in wanting to SILENCE anti-fracking Environmentalists of any influence. They aim to INTIMIDATE US - BEFORE TPP gets passed - so they will have a CLEAR FIELD with minimum Opposition!!!!!

Hillary of course PROMOTED FRACKING internationally when Secretary of State, and her present position on "regulating" it, is, as anyone can see, half-hearted at best!!!
And, first she was FOR TPP, now in response to "public opinion" and NEEDING BADLY TO GET ELECTED, she's "against" it - do you think she'll STICK TO THAT POSITION if elected President of the United States??????

THE FRACKING CORPORATIONS ARE COUNTING ON HILLARY BEING ELECTED PRESIDENT......
Do you SEE how ALL - THIS - HANGS - TOGETHER?????!!!!!

This is not "Conspiracy theory" of all one big plot by some hidden secret mastermind, this is JUST COMMON SENSE based on WHAT EVERYBODY KNOWS TO BE THE TRUTH......

Elect Hillary AND SEE WHAT YOU GET.... TPP NULLIFYING EVERY STATE LAW AND ORDINANCE AGAINST FRACKING.... Corporations RULE!!!!! And, Fracking and Democracy CANNOT CO-EXIST ON THE SAME PLANET.... Corporations can change and over-ride ANY LAWS AT WILL.... THAT is TPP!
Actor Mark Ruffalo and the Presidential election..... NOT a "co-incidence" this happens NOW.....

here sweety.. this you might want to add to your list
Fracking, the Failure of Mainstream Greens and the Corporate Control of U.S. Energy Policy
The name of her new book is Frackopoly, but author Wenonah Hauter tackles issues beyond hydraulic fracturing, more commonly known as fracking. She writes about energy spats past and present, explaining why she believes the energy industry won most of these fights and succeeded in monopolizing U.S. energy policy-making over the past 100 years. But momentum, she notes, has shifted slightly toward the people over the past half-dozen years.

Hauter believes the deregulation of segments of the U.S. energy industry was a bad idea. But no one in power in Washington, D.C., from Capitol Hill to the regulatory agencies, agrees with Hauter. Random Democrats may question whether individual policy decisions are good for the public and the environment. But, unlike Hauter, none dares question the preeminence of energy commodity trading or the reliance on a market-based approach to approving the construction of new energy pipelines through the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).

I seriously doubt that 1 documentary caused that much of a problem for fracking..it's more like YEARS of science causing problems for fracking! When people can see & smell the waste in their water, when Oklahoma gets hundreds of small earthquakes directly attributed to fracking, and when the environment all around fracking is ruined - THAT'S why fracking policies are being protested by people! It's nice for documentaries to get publicity though! ;)

Even ONE documentary, made accessible widely, can cause a great deal of trouble, Yvonne! (Much less researched clips on social media that go viral can cause major shock waves - even when they are hoaxes!) Films like Gaslands trigger more serious people to go surfing, checking facts.

Alone, it wouldn't be enough to create a problem, but once people start checking for themselves, finding research as well as news articles ... And Gaslands has reached people who weren't all anti-fracking before seeing it.
Thanks, BT

I've shared all these over social media.

I doubt 10% of the British public know anything about Fracking and the connection to the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).
