Here's three things I suggest you do on Buy Nothing Day/Black Friday. It's the biggest shopping day of the year. Nothing's wrong with shopping--if what you're buying has meaning and purpose. So if you have to buy something, make it life-changing.

I hate the fact Thanksgiving is slowly being pushed aside as an early retail event. Black Friday was fine. Let idiots kill themselves over electronics, and toys - it is the season of giving.....
It's the season of giving which as the years go buy is losing it's message. We are losing the message of what Thanksgiving represents to the retailers. There is no profit to be made off of Thanksgiving in the retail industry - it's all food related. How can we get the consumer to buy a flat screen tv before they sit down and eat?
This is American consumerism at its most ugly. Sadly. it's only getting worse.

Noted ...For a long time our rule has been that we do not shop during the 'holiday season [through xmas]' for anything other than food. No personal home items nor gifts for that matter. Those are either already pruchased long before this time of year if at all .

Noted, thanks Kathy. I have never shopped on Black Friday and never will. I get claustrophobic in crowds and don't like shopping in general. This Christmas will be a giftless one and I will be avoiding malls and big stores until after the holiday season.

thanx Kathy, one day people will make things to give versus buying things. Blessings!!

Completely artificial nonsensical holiday. Give gifts of love through out the year and not just buying presents for a consumer driven holiday. The best gift I gave my children was to give out gifts of trees and clothing during the Christmas season to those who otherwise would have none.

keep it coming, we need to stop being so consumistic.
we have the power to impose our wants, it all ties together, stop the buying from mass producers unless good corporations, be aware very few known ones are, which brings us to local, which brings us to make it yourself if you can. little changes make big differences, we have changed so many things in our every day choices.
i love this article thank you.

I'm so glad I don't observe x-mas. Yes, I believe in Jesus, but how is beating someone down to get that Wii for sale honoring Christ?
