Ever wonder how a dollar store is able to sell their merchandise at such low prices? It's really not as crazy as it seems.

I love some of the prices in this store for personal and household products. However, if I want quality goods, I must shop somewhere else. Lucky for me, I have a choice of both a Dollar Store and moderate to upper end retail stores in my town.

Thank you. Very interesting reporting.
I just wish they wouldn't be selling mostly Chinese made goods. It kind of takes the fun out of "getting a good deal".

Use them occasionally for small storage items. But always check the label first.

I have noticed they are cheaper but some of the contents are smaller!!

Thanks for this post. We should all shop around because sometimes the prices in these stores are more expensive than in others. It's a bit like assuming the large packet is less costly per gram than the smaller one--it isn't always.

Great for items that do not expire.

Chaep - much of the stuff comes from China.

I've found that the items which seem specially made for the dollar stores really are worth no more than a dollar, so there's no bargain. And you're right, Mary - sometimes even though the package may be the same size as one you see at Wal-Mart, there will be less of the product in the package (I almost bought some sinus medicine at one the other day until I realized that the package only had four doses in it, despite it being a regular-sized package - and I can buy 24 doses at another store for only around $2.50 - so the dollar store one was about two and a half times more expensive than the regular retail store's brand.)

I love the dollar store book aisle, though, and the gift bags.

i have always loved dollar stores, but not so much anymore there prices have gone up sooo much that its rediculous.everything in a bad economy is going up and i cannot figure that out!!!! its a shame, because the dollar stores would make a killing if they would just keep there prices like they used to be.other stores when they have sales are cheaper and thats sad!!!

I Love It, I love our dollar store, and if you order online out of their catalog, you can get say "Coconut Conditioner" or anything else in bulk at basically 50 cents a piece and buy em by the case. Even better prices online...

I have gone into a dollar-type store on several occasions. I bought a few things I needed to accessorize some wreaths I made, and I have purchased some snacks for my trip to the hairdresser. Some of the items are good; others, not. I appreciate the comments about the disparity in contents, though. I will pay closer attention the next time I go into one of those stores. Thanks.

Probably the prices being charged at the outset were exorbitant, as most of this stuff being sold isn't bankrupt stock.

I get a headache going to the dollar store. Everything is the same, and mostly not worth buying. You really need to watch expiry dates, and most of the cleaning stuff is not any cheaper then my other headache giving store, Wally world.

Some good items, for sure, and some you will get cheaper at a regular store.
Helium ballons for occasions are very cheap, and now they have a section for special occasion and other cards which are a better price than other stores, though in some of the categories they really could use more varieties. But that's where I would try first, as they are certainly cheaper. Some of the toys are really disappointing, cheap or not, because they are so poorly made that one would rather spend more elsewhere, if they can, than give something that breaks immediately, to a child. I did get an 8-piece dinner plate, & 8-piece bowl set, $1.00 each item, that everyone just loves. One just has to look, as they have mostly good shelf food item prices, but some other items are too cheaply made.

Yard sales are the way to go! Many things less than a dollar! Free stuff too! Meet interesting people, snoop into their lifestyles via goods. Share political views, brag about pets...ect.Even picked up a date at one! ( he wasn't worth a dollar in the long run..but it was an interesting story).

.... mostly thanks to junk from China. If you look for lasting products you are barking up the wrong tree.

Frugal is one thing; wise is another. I consider myself both frugal and wise. I ventureed inside a Dollar Store and stores like it once simply out of curiosity - only to find fantastic products and fantastic prices. I do refrain from purchasing consumerable products due to shelf life variables, though, have dared to do so on ocassion to find fresh product with fine taste. I DO NOT PUSH MY LUCK THOUGH.
