Dear friends,

Gaza and Israel are on the brink of all-out war - before itís too late, letís raise a massive global outcry for a ceasefire to stop the violence and protect civilians:
Sign the Emergency Petition
The Gaza-Israel crisis is out of control. It's come to this:
bloody full-scale invasion, or a cease-fire.1 With rockets raining down on both sides, Israel launched a ground assault into the Gaza Strip this weekend. Over a hundred combatants and civilians from both sides lie dead.2 The next 48 hours are crucial -- Israel's cabinet will discuss a larger invasion Wednesday. But Hamas floated a Gaza ceasefire months ago, and 64% of Israelis support the idea.3

Both sides know they are in a battle for global legitimacy, and international opinion counts. We need a massive global outcry for a cease-fire now -- sign the emergency petition below, then forward this message to friends and family. We will deliver our petition to senior Israeli and Palestinian leaders this week, as well as in a major billboard campaign:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/gaza_ceasefire_now/1.php

Citizens on both sides are desperate for safety. Many experts believe that without a ceasefire to stabilize Gaza, there is no chance for achieving a comprehensive peace and a fair two-state deal. While the US still maintains no-one must talk to Hamas, Israel itself has begun to break that taboo, and public reports and our own contacts indicate that European and Arab officials now support a Gaza ceasefire.

Like the Hezbollah-Israel war of 2006, this conflict is spinning out of control. Just as it did then, international pressure can help achieve a ceasefire today. The combatants take public opinion very seriously. So let's send a united global message to the warring parties to stop the violence -- sign the petition and spread the word today:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/gaza_ceasefire_now/1.php

With hope and determination,

Paul, Galit, Esra'a, Ricken, Ben, Graziela, Pascal and the whole Avaaz team

PS The UN has already called for both sides to cease all acts of violence4 -- the European Union, Turkey, Russia, the UK, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and many other states have joined the global chorus. This is not just a war but a growing humanitarian crisis. Last month we met with EU Middle East envoy Marc Otte and senior advisers in European member states to deliver a call for a ceasefire and an internationally-overseen opening of the Gaza crossings, and we have seen progress since from the international community.5 There is much more to do. We've campaigned hard for real Middle East talks, but unless Gaza is stabilised, no lasting peace is possible.

Israel is now considering a full-scale invasion of Gaza, which has never worked before. The only answer is a ceasefire deal, already suggested by Hamas and supported by 64% of Israelis and some senior cabinet ministers. With international help, this could make civilians on both sides safer.

March 2, 2008,(YKVE Mundial) - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez criticized the ambiguity of the Secretary General of the United Nations, Ba Ki-Moon, for his comments expressed in reference to the conflict in the Gaza Strip. Ki-Moon classified the attacks against Palestine, which left 90 dead in four days as "excessive use of force" but classified the launching of homemade rockets from Palestine towards Israel, that left one person dead during the same four days, as "terrorism."

"Well, what cynicism!" Chavez said this Sunday in his program Hello President, in Caracas. "And this is coming from the Secretary General of the United Nations. What hope do we have!"

thank you Simon 'star', good on Chavez, I left a comment on another of my submissions regarding gaza/israel, re MOON and the NEAR USELESS UN. Hammas is elected, West Bank USA backed, adn Israel government wants to wipe them out while they live in rubble and fight with sticks and stones and homemade quassam rockets and homemade, while they get sanctioned and cut off everything by Israel and the world does nothing about sanctioning Israel, it is actuallly agains the the US law I found out to do so, even any parts made there. Canada jsuta made a secret deal with them as well. Isralies are 64% for CEASEFIRE, HAMMAS ASKED FOR IT SOMETIME BACK AND ISRAEL DID NOT COMPLY, Please pass this around as much as you can, I just can't myself for several days, and of all times adn what I have been posting on this for days, THIS NEEDS IT THE MOST, PLEASE HELP

In the last five days, at least 117 Palestinians were killed and 300 injured, dozens of them seriously. Sixty percent of the dead and injured were civilians, most of them children, old men and women. Many of the civilians were killed inside their own homes as Israeli warplanes and tanks shelled neighborhoods, particularly in Jabalya and other populated areas of Gaza. Many families lost more than one member, while some lost almost everyone

'US plot against Hamas' revealed

Al-Jazeera

"Documents that appear to show that the US attempted to overthrow the Hamas-led Palestinian government have surfaced.

One of the documents from March 2007 details a plan to oust Hamas by force and instal the rival Fatah movement in power, by supporting fighters from the group with weapons and money.

In Cairo, Condoleezza Rice, the US secretary of state, said she had not read the report which appeared in Vanity Fair magazine.

However, she justified the arming of Fatah, saying the situation called for it......

Evidence showing the US sought to remove Hamas in a coup dates back to 2006, after the group had come to power through Palestinian elections.

A memo sent to Fatah officials, apparently by a senior US diplomat in Jerusalem in November 2006, stated: "If Hamas does not agree [to accept a new government] within the prescribed time, you should make clear your intention to declare a state of emergency and form an emergency government explicitly committed to that platform." The memo was not labelled with official US stamps or seals.

However, Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, did not follow the plan. Rather he formed a unity government with Hamas in early 2007 after continued fighting between the rival factions in the Gaza Strip.

This failure by the US appears to have led to the second document and the plan to oust Hamas by force.

It appears that the US sought to bolster Mohammed Dahlan, the head of Fatah's security forces.

Yet, this too failed as inter-faction fighting broke out in the Gaza Strip and Hamas took control.

Evidence suggests that Hamas was forced to act in order to pre-empt the US plot.

Fatah security forces were trained in Jordan and Egypt, from where they are sent to work in the Gaza Strip.

Nour Odeh, Al Jazeera's correspondent in Ramallah, said that many Palestinians would be upset that Fatah appeared to have played into the hands of an American foreign policy that wanted to make an example out of Hamas, whom the US labels a "terrorist" organisation.

There has been no official response from Abbas."
