Should Prostitution Be Legalised in India?

The so-called 'hollow life' of sex workers does not last beyond 10 years after which they end up as completely impoverished on city streets. The result of legalising prostitution is more security and rights for sex workers.

If it will actually benefit those trapped in the sex trade and provide them and their children with access to medical attention and training for a better future, then it would be a good thing no only for these workers but for India's society as a whole.

Noted. Being the alleged "world's oldest profession," it is obviously not going to stop. Prostitution should be legalized world wide, regulated and overseen by healthcare agencies, and taxed just like any other "profession."

No easy way out for those millions of women and children, this is a shame for Indias's goverment and India's society, there is not only lack of resources, there is lack of education and compasion.

Sadly, The Netherlands has had legalized prostitution for decades. The difference is, these women chose this, they we not forced into it by their families. I'm not saying the Dutch are right, but India brings the issue to a new low in morality.

It totally baffles me why anyone would choose to become a prostitute, but in India it's like the caste system, born into it and die (from) it.
Legalizing would at least give the women some scant form of medical help. I still wonder how a sex worker could be "safe" if checked out and the next john is dripping with AIDS or HIV, then her next john as well as the worker would get it, on and on. It takes weeks for the disease to show up after exposure.
very risky business.

Noted. But we haven't managed to resolve the issue in this country let alone have an opinion about what others should do.

No, legalizing wrongs don't make them right!

I can't imagine a woman who really wants to be a prostitute. So it is her dream job. Even if you give her chance for education, opportunities, different work, she says, no, thank you, I want to be a prostitute. Come on, there is no such a woman. Legalization isn't a help. Opposite.

Where ever prostitution exists (which is probably every where) it should definitely be legalized. It would be advantageous to the government as they would collect tax, health care would be kept under control and the safety of these women would be greatly improved.

Absolutely. Prostitution (and brothels) should be legal everywhere. Not that it is likely to be anybody's first choice of career but, if it's illegal, those who are sufficiently desperate to make their money through offering sexual services for money have no recourse to the law when assaulted. Legalisation would vastly improve conditions and safety for sex workers and their clients.

Absolutely, positively, the oldest profession in the world should be legalized. That's the only to keep it relatively clean and extract taxes.

You don't have to agree with it, but, it is imperitive to to pragmatic about it. Pimps are some of the most scurrilous types of individuals on the face of the Earth.

Personally, I wish women, or men for that matter, would find another way to provide a income. Having said that, it isn't my decision to make. So, let's make it safer for those involved and the unwitting spouses.

IF the women would actually have a better, safer life with prostitution legalized, then I would be for it.
