There's nothing quite like Mardi Gras to underscore just how much Americans like to party, even if we forget what we're partying about. But while most people know the basics -- masks, parades, questionable fashion choices -- the real history of Mardi Gras..

Noted with thanks. I'm sad about the fact that we narrowly missed being in New Orleans for Mardi Gras......hope it is on our cards for the next trip to the great U.S of A.

Every year I swore I would never go to a parade. Each year I would go to a night parade, then I was hooked and out in the street every evening. The night parades are great fun- the beads look like real jewels in the light..and they are all free!
If you miss Mardi Gras, there is the St. Patrick parade in March with floats, shady ladies, strutters doing dance steps, floats with freebies of cabbage, potatoes, carrots ( all the makin's of a stew..you supply the tofu or meat) being handed out along with --beads!
A must go to place at least once in a lifetime. Help support Louisiana economy!

I lived in New Orleans in the 1980s and still miss it! Happy Carnival to all the wonderful folks in the Crescent City.

I still have my red glass beads from Mardi Gras back in the 60's. I did not know that Mobile was the first american incarnation of Mardi Gras. So much to learn, so little time.
