This is most disturbing! Please send emails to sales@1-800-steaks.com and demand that they remove lion meat (which they say is better than Tiger meat!) from their website and stop raising lions for meat. If you know anything about this company -- where they are located -- do as the article says and pass that info along to Cites (Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species) (http://www.cites.org/) Tel: +1 (301) 734 88 91
Fax: +1 (301) 734 52 76

I thought lions were on the endangered species list.....how are they allowed to get way with this?

I do not believe that they are listed in the Endangered Species Act. Wikipedia lists Lions under the Conservation status of Threatened - Vulnerable.

I have been a very vocal advocate of putting lions on the endangered species list for many years. I wrote this essay 5+ years ago, concerning lion's in the wild, their specific problems of survival, and about being served in restaurants. I try to make a case for adding them to the ESA list.

Of Man And Lion

Note the link at the bottom, The Shame Gang, to see how serving lion as food effects all big cats, even those on the Endangered list.

The main point, is to pressure the CITES members to consider placing the lion on the endangered species list. When the next CITES conference takes place, people should stand ready to barrage their legislators and CITES members with mail and calls, to let them know where people stand.

The canned hunts in Africa designate the taking of the mature male "maned" lions (great trophies for some, pffft), which few understand the disruption that concept causes in the pride hierarchy. Lions are rather unique for remaining as social units (prides). The alpha maned male runs off the young male lions and forces them to seek other prides, thereby diversifying genetics (the "stir" I mention). Crooked tails and lack of resistance to disease is showing the effects of inbreeding.

Having lion in the food market for humans in many countries provides outlet for poached lion in Africa. It also allows paperwork alteration/forgery so that unscrupulous people in the states can kill and process cats, like tigers and leopards (endangered) and then alter the paperwork to show they are lion. The link to the Shame Gang is proof that it can (and does) happen that way. (Kudos to Tim Santel, US Fish and Wildlife, for his diligent efforts!)

If lions were endangered, then that too would stop.

Lions are in much bigger trouble in the wild, than most people realize. They show numbers, but the lions they are counting are weak and inbred. When they crash, it will happen very fast.

It is going to take International Treaties and cooperation to get lion onto the Endangered Species list. I see no Hollywooders or rock stars making this a "cause celeb" so it is up to us Earth Citizens to make a giant push the next time they meet and review the Endangered List.

I'm afraid sending emails to exotic game food distributors and restaurants probably won't do much. My essay gets a bit esoteric near the end, as I weave a bit of personal philosophy into it. Please excuse that part if it is a bit too much.

I don't think lion meat is legal because it's cat meat. Also-I have a sneaking suspicion this isn't lion meat, but cat meat. It could be. I reported this to the FBI and USDA.

I tried to write to them but the email came back as undeliverable. The site also states that they are trying to get USDA approval for selling tiger meat. Raising exotic animals on ranches like this should be illegal. These animals are abused and live in horrible conditions.

I reported this lion meat site to the FBI and USDA already. I highly suspect it's CAT meat (domestic cats) being chopped up. However, even if it were real lion meat-IT IS STILL CAT MEAT and violates USDA regulations. Is it real? I don't know-note that many of the idol rich WILL pay ANYTHING to eat "exotic meat" including live monkey brains.

Lion meat IS illegal-period. It is the same as cat meat. You also have to have inspections before selling produce.

I am disgusted. At the end of the day ALL of the animals that this company raises are endangered, not just the lions and tigers. It is probably a 'factory farm' style operation where the animals are seen as cash crops and then hacked up by cruel workers who have absolutely no compassion for animal life. In my opinion calling the company is not going to do anything, they are not going to remove any products simply because animal rights/activists ask them to. This needs to be escalated, we need to bring this company to the attention of the FDA and the HSUS so they can fight to have them shut down. Flood the FDA with calls (1-888-463-6332) Report them to the Humane Society of the US (202-452-1100)

Be their voice.

OMG.
This turns my stomach, makes me furious,
and hurts my mind. I have reported this to
the FBI, and will shortly be reporting this
to the FDA. Someone needs to do some serious
prison time for this, and I sincerely hope to
God someone does. Here's the message I sent to
the FBI:

To whom it may concern:
I am filing this complaint against 1-800-Steaks.com. They are offering, for sale, the meat of lions and tigers. I cannot believe that this is legal, and it should be stopped. I would appreciate it deeply if the FBI would investigate this company, and take any necessary legal action against them, if they are violating the law. Thank you kindly,

'The meat was advertised on the company's website as originating from lions farmed in South Africa.

But within 24 hours of the activists being alerted last week, the wording was changed and now reads: "Our Lions are ranch-raised in the United States of America."

The national Environment Department confirmed that both a Cites (Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species) permit and veterinary health permit would be required to export lion meat.

It said no permit applications had been received by any of the provinces and no permits had been issued.'

This is from a South African newspaper. Is it possible that the company is LYING; and that the lions are NOT "farmed" in the U.S., as stated, but in South Africa or elsewhere? I can hardly believe that ANYone in the U.S. could get a "permit" to "farm" a threatened species. Animal rights people would've been on their backs immediately. And since there are no permits for such meat..... I think the ads are a LIE. I think the first ads were more probably the correct ones; and they just changed the location of the "farm", on paper, to try and avoid their OWN laws. Perhaps they have a less efficient enforcement of animal laws in South Africa; or else they have more land where such a {presumably illegal} farm could be hidden from sight. Or perhaps these lions really are bush-caught? {Illegally, of course.} And the ad is just trying to obscure the issue. If it is an American company, that doesn't mean that the lions are from America.

The USDA ought to be able to clear that one up. Good idea, to ask them.

Remember, that those who are against government regulation, and for DE-regulation and unlimited Private Enterprise, would be for the RIGHT of anyone who had the money to invest, to set up such a "farm" or any other kind of business, with NO oversight or regulation whatsoever. Think of what you are asking for, if you ask for NO govt regulation.

I would urge EVERYONE reading this post
to take a few minutes and file a complaint
with the FBI and the FDA. It's very easy to
do. Just go to fbi.gov and fda.gov, and take
it from there. If we don't make any noise about
these people, the feds are never going to know!
Shout it out and make yourself be heard!

maybe we can find a way to get this to some Hollywood actors/actresses who although rich, they to would not believe in this, and would support our trying to take this co. down. The best place I can think of is try earthlings.com . They have a mind blowing documentry that I swear will turn your stomach, it is an extremly powerful video deeper than most can understand, especially those who don't give a care about animals. The first time I watched it my heart bled for these animals, I cried an entire day, and from what I hear most people can NOT sit through the whole movie, I managed to do it maybe that is why I cried all day. Eeeh just a thought get earthlings involved some how, I know the video was narrated by jaquine phoenix

I AM VEGETARIAN---I DON'T NEED MEAT OF ANIMALS TO LIVE OR SUSTAIN MY BODY. THOUGH MY DOCTOR DOESN'T AGREE. HE WANTS ME TO EAT AT LEAST WHITE MEAT. I TRIED (BECAUSE I WAS SEVERELY ANEMIC) BUT I HAD BEEN A COMPLETE VEGETARIAN FOR YRS...JUST COULDN'T DO IT. STILL CAN'T SO YES I AM A VEGETARIAN AGAIN. VERY EASY FOR ME TO BE ONE. ANY OF YOU TRYING TO BECOME VEGETARIAN--AND FINDING IT HARD TO DO.......THEN DO IT SLOWLY. YOUR BODY HAS TO CHANGE FROM WAHT IT IS USED TO TO LIVING ON FRUITS, VEGGIES, ETC. AND SOY BURGERS AND OTHER ITEMS ARE AWESOME!!!! EVEN GRILLED OUT. SO DON'T GIVE UP PLS...IT'S WORTH IT FOR THE ANIMALS WE LOVE.

I've been vegan for most of my life (I'm 48) and my labs are perfect. Most anemics are meat eaters. Though anemia has different reasons, B12 is richly supplemented in SOY milk, but also in a simple multi-vitamin once a day. What meat eaters don't know is that B vitamins destabilize in heat-unless one is prepared to eat meat and eggs raw-which is too disgusting to think about. My overall cholesterol is 119. That's because I don't take anything animal in my body-your body makes all it needs. Most physicians are ignorant about nutrition-but most assuredly it's extremely healthy to be vege.

I just did a search and found several other companies that do this.

The Meatman has exotics such as all from US farms: Black Bear, Horse, Kangaroo, Lion, Tiger, Zebra, Kudu, and many more...
the website is: http://meatmansteaks.com/

Exotic Meat Market: bear, zebra, lion, iguana, and many more along with a glowing review on the homepage from a pastor Jeff Beltz, Hydesville Community Church, CA
http://www.1-800-exoticmeats.com/index.htmll

I only searched for a couple of minutes so there are probably a lot more of them. The last one doesn't say where it's lion meat comes from but it does say that some of the others are imported.

I really can't believe this is happening -- not that it surprises me. All of God's creatures are just one big buffet for most of the human population. If you think the Chinese eating dog's and cat's is wrong - just look in your own back yard to see what is really going on. The US population isn't as civilized as we think.

Glad to be Vegan !!!!!

No, tiger meat isnt legal, lion meat can be. They should be on the Endangered Species list to prevent this (and using tigers whose paperwork is altered to make them become lions. There was a big case about this some years back.

So, forgive my redundancy, but I am going to paste a post I made at another site concerning this very thing, along with a case for stopping canned hunts in South Africa (canned hunts can also be guided hunts to places where lions are, and not protected).

----------------------------------------

Yes, lion is indeed on the menu at game restaurants in the USA and numerous other countries (tigers are not, they are listed as Endangered). Lions should NOT be served in restaurants though. They should be also listed as Endangered.

If they were, then tigers and leopards wouldn't end up on the dinner menu, because there are scams of killing tigers, leopards and other endangered cats, and altering the paperwork to make them lions. This helps fill the meat orders and allows these unscrupulous people to sell the endangered cat hides and parts on the blackmarket.

There was a case I followed for a couple of years, urging people to write letters to press for tough prosecution of a gang of people doing exactly what's described above.
The Shame Gang

The culprits ended up getting long jail time.
Here is a page of photos showing their grisly work (warning graphic photos)
Prepping Tigers For Meat Markets

The canned lion hunts in South Africa (and everywhere else too) should end as well, as many of them just take "hunters" to a pride they track and set up the kill. The law specifies mature "maned" male lions (many times the Alpha) which is the very worse one to prune. This policy will cause a crash in species that isn't being discussed much.
Here is an essay I wrote 5-6 years ago.
Of Man And Lion

Excerpt:
"So, when human hunters make their kills based on the preference of pride Alpha males (for the manes) they disrupt the natural genetic "stir". Young males do not end up leaving the pride. They don't have to with the "old man" out of the way. Mothers and sisters get bred by males barely showing mane. By the time they get maned they too are hunted, as the preference of poachers and licensed hunters. That leaves yet another cycle of male offspring breeding back into the same genetic pool.

Three generations of this (generations are short when 3 year old new-maned lions are pruned out) and the pool is so inbred that disease and sterility begins to emerge as natural weaknesses. Wildlife biologists are already observing this scenario."

Crooked tails, sterility and failing resistance to common diseases are indicators of in-breeding and a potential crash in population. I personally advocate "photo safaris" allowing local tribes and people assist, and create good revenue for their efforts. Banning canned hunts and listing lions as Endangered will go a long way in preventing the extinction of lions. It will also get tiger and leopard off game menus that hit the market as "lion" (from altered paperwork).

Sorry for the long post, but when hunting is allowed in any manner, on threatened and endangered species, then there will be those who exploit loopholes for illegal profits. I am not totally against typical hunting where wild game is plentiful and used for personal food for hunters who engage in these activities. The meat is free of chemicals and hormone supplements found in domestically processed meats. It also helps maintain the natural balance because humans have removed so many of the natural predators (wolves, cougars, etc.).

I have never been a fan of trophy only hunts, and I feel angry when finding a rotted buck corpse in the forest, who was shot, antlers taken and the rest left behind to rot. That hide and meat can be utilized but it's just wasted. Indeed the scavenger species find it, but it's not a normal cog in the gears of nature's balance. It's wildlife feeding on a human's wastefulness. Shame, shame, shame...

Ok I don't know if this the above website is true as they have Dodo bird listed but you can leave comments on the about us page. I left a few - might have gotten a little carried away- but no regrets. Only regret is I don't live in Nebraska where this place supposedly is. Would love to feed the animals a bit of Sydney and his gang of sicko's. If you haven't went to the website please do and leave comments. Flood them and the USDA or any other agency you can think of with complaints against them.

The site is: http://petsorfood.com/

Ok the site above http://petsorfood.com has to be a hoax. I just went online and tried to order different types of animals and it wouldn't let me. It gave me an error message that the sicko Sydney's email is not correct. It didn't say anything about mine which was totally fake as well. If anyone has any idea's on who to contact to get this website shut down please let me know. These people are sick and the comments are just horrible. I am really sad today to call my self human!!!

Luke S, (and everyone else who reads the above 2 comments)

The above site is in fact a hoax (Duh--- Dodo bird!!!!) you can go to the following and article for more info on the hoaxs that are on the internet at them moment:

http://www.care2.com/news/member/374694206/1114881

However just because this one is a hoax doesn't mean that other websites are. There are still animals out there being sold for meat that shouldn't be (cows, chickens, pigs and turkeys included) ((Sorry Vegan and proud of it)) We need to stand up for these animals and stop the slaughter!!!

Again sorry that I wasted everyone's time on a hoax--please forgive me!!! Oh well just give me the dunce hat and call it even!!!!

The way people are these days, and the idol rich are willing to pay ANYTHING for "exotic" meat, I take it seriously and WILL report them to authorities in addition to links toward PAYPAL. I do not believe for a second it is a hoax, other than CLAIMING to sell lion meat-and is selling domestic cat meat instead

People are willing to pay THOUSANDS of dollars at a chance to have a monkey bound to a table and its head cracked open by the patrons (hitting it over the head with a wooden mallet) and its live brain eaten-not a hoax. It's for real.

Hoax or not it is disturbing that anyone would spend that much time to pull a hoax. Also, I just checked http://www.1-800-exoticmeats.com/index.htmll and it looks ligit. You can actually add some lion meat to a shopping cart! Say it's a hoax, please!

lol alright im all finished here. Yes im selfish and yes i did this for entertainment in between working. I really am having the bbq though and these responses got a lot of people laughing pretty hard and WAY more excited for the big day. So thanks for the ultra crazy responses. BTW, jesus ate fish right? Fish is a living animal...doesn't that make you kind of shallow? What do you got against fish?

Regardless this is a hoax or not, people DO pay any amount of money for "exotic meat" - federal authorities will be investigating so I guess if it's a joke they will be duly entertained when the feds knock on their door.

Troy Dube:

Selfish: YES!!!! Most definitely! And soooooo very happy YOU and YOUR shallow friends enjoyed all you did and the responses.

"Ultra Crazy Responses"????? NO.
You just don't get it do you.......any of you? Who laughed thinking it was all funny. Well it's not.

We fight hard fights here...win battles but the war is on-going. It's IMPORTANT .....we are the voices for those without voices that are murdered-s you are going to be eating meat at your almighty barbq--but they felt fear, pain....all that we feel our animals both domestic and wild feel.

Yes...you are all JERKS.
But as one friend of mine put it: 'Don't feed the trolls.' So I am done with you-----I have much more important things to use my time for.

As for fish....yes Jesus fed a huge multitude of people with only a couple of fish. HE is still in the miracle business.

ME? I am a vegetarian and proud of it. NO meat of any kind.....or fish or seafood.

But Jesus did what HE had to do to help HIS people survive. My walk with my Father is most important to me. And being vegetarian is MY CHOICE.

Enough is enough.

I'm done here......no more feeding the trolls ( all of YOU)

Past Member: Yes, it's just better to ignore Troy. He doesn't seem to realize that THIS is NOT the place to joke around. This is where we help bring about change and address gross wrongs. I doubt that he would have gone to a cancer website and told a joke about cancer folks but he feels it's okay to do it here. Just shows what he thinks of animals. Jokes have a place and a time. That place and time is not here. Hopefully he'll get that one day.

Hoax or not-I take every single claim seriously knowing how things are this day and age-still, the feds are investigating. You are talking about serious violations of endangered species and selling of meat that can endanger public safety. Cat and dog meat IS consumed by people and that's no lie. Two people in Vietnam have contracted RABIES by eating cat meat. Even a hoax can be harmful for the poster-they would have to reimburse the cost of investigation.
