When Serving 3 Meals

The expression that one should have "three square meals a day" comes from the Royal Navy. In the early days of the Navy the sailors used to be served three meals each day on wooden trays which were square in shape and had borders or edges in order to keep the food on the tray. It is from this tradition that the expression became commonplace.

Even today the Royal Navy have some good expressions one of which involves a cure for sea-sickness. They say there is only one cure for sea-sickness:

"Sit under a tree"

(i.e. Don't go to sea in the first place)

Of course, there is another cure for sea-sickness, take a plane instead!
