As the founder of Care2 and the PetitionSite, Randy is a pioneer of online advocacy. Randy launched Care2 in 1998 to empower individuals to take collective action in support of social and environmental causes. Today, Care2 helps over 20 million members “Make a Difference” with daily actions, healthy living advice, news and blogs on causes, petitions and more.
Randy was inspired to start the PetitionSite.com after receiving email petition-chainletters that filled inboxes in the early days of the Internet. The PetitionSite provided a central platform for thousands of early online petition authors to collect signatures, scoring victories on both local and national levels. Today, Care2′s highly engaged community starts and drives citizen and nonprofit campaigns that win local school initiatives, hold powerful corporations accountable, and protect ecosystems around the world.
Care2 was also one of the first online social ventures, innovating an “Engine For Good” model where good actions generate revenues that help fuel more good actions. The Company serves as a matchmaker between Consumer Brands, Nonprofit Organizations and Care2′s influential, 70% female, audience. The Company has recruited more than 30 million donors and advocates for 1,000 nonprofit organizations. Care2 is a certified B Corporation.
Before starting Care2 and the Petitionsite, Randy co-founded one of the web’s first viral apps – electronic greeting card service, eCards.com, in 1995.
Randy is a proud composter, avid naturalist, and kiteboarder, and once trekked across Borneo with two Penan tribesmen. Randy loves spending time with his two young children, his wife, Nancy, and a menagerie of pets.
Randy holds an AB from Harvard University and an MBA from Stanford’s Graduate School of Business.
Marlin joined Care2 in 1999 as the COO, bringing with him 18 years of high tech marketing and general management expertise. At Care2, Marlin manages the P & L of the company and the senior management team, including the heads of business development, engineering, marketing, content, sales and finance. Marlin is one of the primary drivers for developing and maintaining a profitable business model for the company.
Marlin also works closely with Care2′s Advisory Board, comprised of five executives from leading internet community and media companies. The role of the Advisory Board is to help identify new business opportunities, provide feedback on strategic initiatives and facilitate connections with potential business partners. The advisors are based in San Francisco and New York, and meet quarterly. A private investment bank, Markwood Capital Alliance, is also involved with Care2′s Advisory Board.
Prior to Care2, Marlin was VP of Marketing for the Enterprise Storage Division at Quantum, where he played a significant role in turning a money-losing business into a $700 million industry leader. He has also held marketing management positions at HP and was a management consultant at Bain and Company. Earlier in his career, Marlin was a consultant for Commtech International Management Corporation, which later became his connection to Randy and Care2.
Marlin holds a BS in Engineering from the University of Michigan and an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business. In his spare time he is a founder and Chairman of the Foundation for a start-up charter elementary school.
Matt is carbon-neutral and solar powered. His work at Care2.com combines a lifelong enthusiasm for environmental conservation with 18 years of experience imagining, designing, and developing software products and services. He is an eco-activist and a systems architect, an expert on CFLs and SQL, and equally at home discussing the minutiae of search engine optimization or grid-tied photovoltaic arrays.
He joined Randy in 1998 to build Care2 into the web’s largest social network for good. His ongoing advocacy of open-source tools, scalability, and high availability created the platform for Care2′s ongoing success. His recruitment of Care2′s crackerjack Engineering team has provided the infrastructure for the past 10 years’ worth of innovative web development on both Care2.com and ThePetitionSite.com.
As CTO, Matt oversees all aspects of technology at Care2, including leadership of initiatives in site search, SEO, and email deliverability.
On weekends, Matt can be found composing and recording music on his overgrown corner of rural Sonoma County, where he lives with his wife and son.
Marya joined Care2 in November 2007 and is responsible for Care2′s product and marketing strategy and execution. Marya has managed the development, launch and sales of award winning educational and IT products for more than 10 years. Marya managed two classroom testing packages for CTB/McGraw-Hill, including one that has been honored with two CODiE awards and the Tech & Learning Magazine Award of Excellence. Prior to CTB/McGraw-Hill, Marya also managed product lines for Critical Path, generating $25M in annual sales.
Marya holds a BA in Economics from UC Davis.
Marya is an advocate of animal rescue and has three adopted shelter cats.
Eric is the vice president of business development at Care2.com where he helps hundreds of campaigns, candidates, and nonprofits connect with donors and supporters online. At Care2 Eric advises on donor lead acquisition and multichannel conversion strategies. He has contributed to integrated conversion efforts on behalf of nonprofits in the US, Canada, and the United Kingdom and over 100 other countries. Eric serves on the board of directors of two national nonprofit organizations, Humane Farm Animal Care and the Marine Fish Conservation Network.
Prior to joining Care2 Eric designed and executed integrated advocacy campaigns for environmental nonprofits for more than seven years. Eric has an MBA from the Carey School of Business at Johns Hopkins University, an MA in government and international studies from the University of South Carolina and a BS in political science from the University of Wyoming. In addition to his work in the environmental advocacy arena, Eric has extensive experience working on political and issue campaigns from Wyoming to South Africa.
Ana Marie has more than 25 years in Finance and Accounting experience in government, for profit, and not-for-profit organizations. Prior to joining Care2, she worked for various start-up companies in ramping up venture capital funding. Her focus and expertise in financial modeling, designing KPI reports, budgeting, and managing day-to-day financial activities providing the company with greater financial positioning.
Ana Marie has an MBA in International Business and earned her Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting with honor from South University, Georgia.
Ana Marie is passionate in supporting various charities including volunteering with Second Harvest Food Bank. She enjoys traveling with her family and her rescue boxer dog Rocco.
As our VP of Engineering, Geoff leads a team of skilled engineers focused on enabling members and visitors to experience and interact with Care2′s content and community.
Geoff has been working in the engineering sector for 20+ years, having started as a software engineer and independent consultant, followed by extended stints at Apple, TiVo, Cisco as well as his own startup venture. Geoff has worked within large corporate environments as well as small startup teams, and always with a mindset of evolving and improving process and technology every step of the way.
Geoff’s held an equal interest and focus on improving not only technology but the world around him. From his use of recycled products in the production of photographic confetti to his role in the initiation of an environmental group at Apple that lead to their use of recycled materials and composting in their onsite cafe, Geoff has continually kept his thought on the opportunity we have today to impact the world of tomorrow.
Joe Baker joined Care2 in August 2006. Joe oversees Care2′s recruitment campaigns for nonprofit partners, Care2′s membership growth efforts, and Care2′s editorial content – the Healthy Living and Cause Channels.
Prior to Care2, Joe was the Executive Director of N-TEN. He also worked for Amnesty International USA as the Director of Internet Communications after serving as Grassroots Advocacy Director and Deputy Director, Western Region. In addition to his extensive nonprofit management experience, Joe spent seven years performing and managing research in telecommunications and software engineering.
Joe has a Ph.D. in Communication Systems and a B.S. in Economics/Systems Science from UCLA.
Joe serves as the Vice President of Outreach for Death Penalty Focus and volunteers for the Sierra Club and Amnesty International.
Randy is responsible for building the Care2 sales team and driving advertising and business sponsorship sales. A veteran of the sales arena, Ferrell came to Care2 in 2000 from The American Taekwondo Association’s Black Belt Academy, where he was #1 in all-time sales and established strong ties to the community as the Vice President of Sales and Marketing. Ferrell also received awards for being #1 in sales for Workout America while building a regional network of health and fitness clubs, and for achieving top worldwide sales for Coppertone Spectra. Ferrell brings a wide range of sales executive skills to Care2, including an extensive track record of hiring, training and motivating high-powered sales teams. He received his initial sales and marketing training at Florida State University and Gulf Coast Community College.
Justin Perkins is Vice President of Strategic Partnerships with Care2.com. With Care2 since 2006, Justin has managed over 600 brand engagement campaigns and high impact partnerships focused on animal rights, human rights, environmental sustainability, and responsible brands in the natural products industry. As a veteran of digital marketing, branding, and cause marketing, he frequently speaks at conferences in the nonprofit and natural products industries.
Justin helps nonprofits and impact oriented brands build large and passionate communities of advocates, donors, fans, customers, and brand loyalists online. Successful partnerships with the likes of Jane Goodall, Audubon, ONE Campaign, and Consumers Union have yielded millions of people more deeply connected to these brands.
As an entrepreneur, Justin grew an organic farming business and launched a human rights nonprofit in Congo. In 2008, he founded OLOMOMO Nut Company, now a fast-growing, angel-investor-backed, flavored nut snack brand picked by New Hope as one of “the top 10 brands to watch in 2014.” With distribution in over 1,000 natural grocery stores, Olomomo is on track to be a national brand.
Justin was awarded “40 Under 40” business leaders in the Rocky Mountain area by BizWest magazine in 2015.
Prior to working with Care2, spanned several industries including water conservation, athletic apparel, and business management consulting. Justin has an MBA from the University of Colorado and a BA in History and World Perspectives with a focus on international development. Justin lives in Boulder, CO with his little family and Border Collie, Maya. He loves hiking, trail running, skiing, travel, adventure, and has a huge crush on Care2 and the Care2 community.
Director, Acquisition and Retention
Care2′s Acquisition and Retention Team (or ART) helps grow Care2′s member base by supporting petition authors, planning media and petition delivery events, launching petitions around pressing social issues, running creative social media campaigns, fostering partnerships with organizations and companies, and more.
Emily joined Care2 as a campaigner in January of 2007 after working as a newspaper reporter and volunteering with various environmental and human rights nonprofits. In 2009 she took a short break to serve a term of Americorps doing environmental education service work in Portland, Oregon.
Emily holds a BS in journalism and a BA in music (violin performance) from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. Today she remains in Portland, and in her free time she raises chickens, grows a vegetable garden, plays guitar and sings in a folk band, bike commutes, brews kombucha and does other “very Portland” things.
As Director of Nonprofit Campaigns at Care2, Natasha leads a highly creative and skilled campaigns team that connects hundreds of nonprofits in the US and around the globe with passionate donor members and supporters within Care2′s community. Since 2007, she’s run countless online campaigns committed to advancing social justice, protecting our planet and building healthier lives for everyone.
Prior to Care2, Natasha was Director for Amnesty International USA’s Urgent Action Program, and brought more than 18 years of organizing, volunteer and work experience in the human rights movement.
Natasha holds an MA in Philosophy from the University of Colorado-Boulder, where she focused on feminist ethics and rights theory, and a BS in Mathematics and Philosophy from LSU.
In her spare time, she can be found wandering the trails of northern California with her husband, young son and 80-lb “puppy.”
As managing editor of Healthy Living and Causes, Megan works with her editorial team to provide meaningful content that empowers readers to improve their lives and their communities.
Megan first joined the Care2 family in 2009, after earning her BA in English from Santa Clara University and volunteering at a domestic abuse shelter. She later moved to Cambodia to teach English, before coming back to Care2 as an editor for Healthy Living.
While she was born and raised in the Midwest, Megan has since found her home in Asheville, North Carolina, where she enjoys hiking in the Appalachian Mountains, cooking vegetarian pizza and pruning her tomato plants.
