Butterfly Rewards is Care2’s newest, easiest, and perhaps most fun way to make an impact on the world!

Simply take action, earn credits, and then redeem them to help important organizations around the world. Do good, and you get credits to do even more good. How cool is that?!

The program works because advertising sponsors value Care2 and our members. Advertisers pay us based on the number of visitors, page views, purchases, etc. they receive from exposure on Care2. We allocate a portion of that money to cover the Butterfly Credits (“Credits”) you receive from taking action, and the rest pays for Care2 servers, staff, etc. When you redeem your Credits, Care2 makes a cash donation to a nonprofit to pay for the gift you've chosen.

All this goodness is possible because of trust. So please, help us keep the trust. If people try to game the system by using automated systems, blocking advertisements, performing meaningless search queries, posting junk just to get credits, etc. the trust will be broken. No trust, no goodness.

So, if you break the trust, your account will be fed to a pack of wild hyenas. We reserve the right to suspend, block, reduce credits and otherwise banish any account we, in our sole discretion, believe is not being used to help maintain this code of trust.

No. See the part above about “trust”. We love monkeys, but our sponsors prefer real people. Also, there are daily limits for earning Credits. The limits are intended to provide Credits for normal use. If you do more, that’s fantastic, but you won’t earn extra credits. Please familiarize yourself with the limits.

Most legitimate, non-automated searches count, but not all. For example, searches to URL’s (i.e., search terms ending in .com, .org, .net, .edu), searches to sites for which the URL is well known such as HotMail, ESPN, MySpace, Facebook, GMail, AOL, etc., and searches for stock quotes will not count for Credits. Why? The money to pay for Credits earned through search comes from people clicking on the paid listings within the search results.

Great question! Set Care2 as your browsers home page and use Care2's web search for your all of your web searches. Use it every day and the credits will start piling up. We love that question.

Butterfly Credits (“Credits”) have no cash value to you - meaning you can’t somehow cash them in and buy yourself an ipod. Credits may only be redeemed on Care2 for the gifts we offer via our nonprofit partners.

Active Care2 members have two years to redeem credits. Credits older than 2 years old will be removed from your accounts, composted, fed to the worms, and eventually turned into the rich organic dirt that will grow future generations of Butterfly Credits on Care2.

Credits on accounts that are inactive for six months will also be removed and composted.

Each action type has a limit on the number of credits you can earn through that type of action. For example, at the time of this update, you arable to earn 20 credits for the first 10 comments you leave on a healthy & green living post. After 10, you will not earn credits for that type of action. All actions and limits are listed on the how to earn credits page. Credits and limits may be changed as needed.

You can tell if you are going to earn credits for an action by looking for this icon (insert pill image). When this icon is green, you will earn credits for that action. If the icon is gray, you can't earn credits -- either you've already hit your maximum or you are not logged in.

Glad you asked! We'll even keep the print large so it's easy to read: The Butterfly Rewards system is in beta - meaning it may have bugs, mis-allocate credits or otherwise not perform like we'd like it to. Therefore, we may, at any time, for whatever reason we see necessary, change, suspend, or otherwise modify any and all parts of it. You must have javascript enabled to participate in the program. Bottom line, we are making absolutely no legally binding guarantees to you at all about the Butterfly Rewards program. Seriously. This is a new concept, so we may need to adjust the model to make it work. What we will promise you is that we will always try to "do the right thing", for our members, the causes, the advertisers and our other key stakeholders. We know that if we don't earn your trust, we won't have anything, so we try to be as transparent as possible, do the right thing, and be deserving of your trust.
